Akwa United's Mfon Udoh has played down on his omission from the list of invited players for the Super Eagles’ upcoming games against Seychelles and Egypt.
The former Enyimba forward is presently the top marksman in the Nigeria Professional Football League with seven goals to his name, and despite the inclusion of two local based stars in the squad, he is unperturbed about his exclusion.
According to him, he respects the choices made by coach Gernot Rohr; adding that every individual invited for the March games against the Pirates and Pharaohs are all deserving of the chance.
“Truth be told, I am not disappointed, in fact, I have never been disappointed by any released team list for the national team. My belief always is that the coach knows what he wants to achieve each time he invites players," Udoh told Goal.
“He knows the kind of players he needs to achieve the results he wants. I have looked through that list and I can say boldly that all the invited players all merit the call, so I cannot be disappointed or take offence that I am not one of them."
With the Africa Cup of Nations lurking around the corner, the present NPFL top scorer said he will be working harder to see if he could break into the team
“I hope to continue in my goalscoring form and see how things would work out, it will be a thing of joy to be considered for a place in the national team ahead of the Nations Cup," he continued.
“It is always a thing of joy to represent your country, so when the chance comes you grab it with both hands.”
The Super Eagles have a dead rubber AFCON 2019 matchday six and the final qualifier against Seychelles on March 22 and an international friendly against Egypt four days later. Both games will be played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
