The six-time European champions started off their campaign for a fourth world title on a winning note against the west African giants

Germany U20 women coach Maren Meinert is demanding more from her girls, especially in the attack after a 1-0 win over Nigeria on Monday afternoon in Brittany.

Stefanie Sanders’ strike from a goal-mouth scramble in the 69th minute helped the Europeans ensure their dominance over the West Africans at the Stade de Marville, Saint Malo.

Despite the win, the Germans remained second on the Group D standings despite tied on three points and goal difference behind log leaders China, who defeated debutants Haiti in their opening match on the same day.

The German tactician, who has managed to clinch the world title twice at the 2010 and 2014 editions since taking over the team in 2008, assured that she will work on her side’s form ahead of Thursday’s clash with the Asians.

"It was the competitive game we expected, we defended very well with the whole team," Meinert told media.

“But we had some problems with the final pass to the top, and of course we are very happy that we won the game 1-0.

"Regeneration is on the agenda, and we'll see exactly what we've done well and where we can improve - especially on the final pass.

"With China, we have a very orderly opponent, who demands different play skills than Nigeria, and the first victory in the back will definitely make it easier to play, and with good recovery, we'll be back on full throttle on Thursday."
