Philipp Lahm made his 500th career appearance for Bayern Munich in their clash against Schalke on Saturday, moving him level with Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The club captain started the clash at Allianz Arena from the bench and was introduced in the 77th minute to a hero's welcome.

Lahm played his first game for the Bavarians 5197 days ago, in November 2002, during a 3-3 draw against Lens in the Champions League.

The legendary full-back came on a substitute in the 92nd minute in that game, with Schweinsteiger also making his debut in the same match. The pair now both stand joint-eighth in Bayern's all-time top appearance list on 500 matches.

Lahm now seems destined to overtake Schweinsteiger in the charts and catch seventh-placed Bernd Durnberger - who played 501 games for Die Roten - before possibly overtaking him too.

Club icon Franz Beckenbauer remains the next hurdle to overcome in sixth on 526 games, but Lahm's future beyond the end of this season is uncertain and may mean that milestone remains out of reach.

There has been persistent talk the World Cup winner with Germany is considering retirement this summer, though he has insisted that he intends to see out his contract that runs till 2018.

In his time with the club, Lahm has won seven Bundesliga titles and was a key part of their 2012-13 treble-winning season under Jupp Heynckes, lifting his solitary Champions League trophy to date.

A regular since his introduction into the first team by Felix Magath, the 33-year-old has worked with eight head coaches at Bayern, featuring at left-back and right-back predominantly before a rebirth of sorts in central midfield under Pep Guardiola.

Lahm has been Bayern captain since Mark van Bommel's departure in 2011, in which time he has lifted eight of the 14 major honours he has won with the club.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso played his 100th game in Die Roten colours when he faced Schalke as he continues to be a mainstay in the side after joining from Real Madrid in 2014.
