K'Ogalo started their league title quest on a higher note with a win against K.Sharks on Sunday

Gor Mahia beat newbies Kariobangi Sharks 3-1 in their Kenyan Premier League opener played on Sunday at Thika Municipal Stadium.

Defender Harun Shakava, new signing Jean-Baptiste Mugiraneza and assistant captain Jacques Tuyisenge scored for Gor Mahia before super-sub Mathew Odongo secured a consolation for Kariobangi Sharks.

Sharks, however, were the side which started stronger, knocking at Gor Mahia’s door twice within the first five minutes.

Michael Ovella combined well with Ibrahim Kitawi to scare Gor Mahia keeper Boniface Oluoch in the 2nd and 3rd minutes before K’Ogalo stabilized thereafter.

Godfrey Walusimbi in action against KSharks

Godfrey Walusimbi won the midfield battle where former Tusker ace Osborne Monday was and advanced to taste Robert Mboya's hands in Kariobangi Sharks' goal at the stroke of quarter-hour mark. A minute later, Shakava made use of a corner-kick to head in K’Ogalo’s opening goal.

The William Muluya coached outfit then struggled in search of an equalizer with Duke Abuya coming closer in the 36th minute but it is Gor Mahia players who went to the breather with smiling faces.

Rwandan international Mugiraneza had just grabbed his first goal in green colours in the 38th minute having shot a rebound past Mboya. Jacques Tuyisenge crossed the ball to Godfrey Walusimbi, who shot towards Kariobangi Sharks’ goal and on rebound, Mugiraneza hit it into the net.

The hosts kept chasing after the ball in the second-half until the 67th minute when Ugandan Mathew Odongo was introduced. He stirred up the team; his efforts almost yielding fruits in the 77th minute but keeper Boniface Oluoch was alert to thwart any dangers.

Two minutes to the end of regulation time, Tuyisenge tapped in Walusimbi’s cross for Gor Mahia’s third goal but Odongo was keen on denying Boniface Oluoch’s clean sheet, a thing he successfully did in injury time with Kariobangi Sharks’ consolation.
