Kaizer Chiefs lead Orlando Pirates in race to sign Kabelo Mahlasela

Komphela's team looked very thin on the left hand side of their midfield, but the management appears likely to bring in Mahlasela for the new season

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly leading Orlando Pirates in the race to sign Bloemfontein Celtic attacking midfielder Kabelo Mahlasela.

According to local reports, Amakhosi are already preparing a pre-contract for Mahlasela when the January transfer window opens next week.

Mahlasela has already informed Phunya Sele Sele that he won't be renewing his contract with them.

His current deal with the Free State outfit expires at the end of the season, and Mahlasela dropped the biggest hint yet that he will be returning to Gauteng to pursue his career.

Mahlasela, a former Roses United player, came through the youth ranks at the Buccaneers, but indications are that he won't be returning to Parktown.

The 26-year-old has featured 14 times in all competitions this season with a single goal and two assists to his name.

And while the Glamour Boys are in need of a left-footed player to fill the void left by George Lebese at the start of the campaign, Steve Komphela appears to be keen on Mahlasela.

The Naturena-based outfit has already signed Leonardo Castro from Mamelodi Sundowns as part of strengthening their striking department.
