Indian Super League side (ISL) side Kerala Blasters are all set to play a pre-season friendly match against La Liga club Girona FC in July. The game will be played at Kochi's famed Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.
The David James-coached franchise which finished sixth in the 2017/18 ISL season will be the second Indian team to play against a top-tier European club after Delhi Dynamos. The Delhi based franchise had played a friendly match against Premier League club West Bromwich Albion in 2016.
It will be interesting to see the Kochi-based side pit their wits against a quality opponent like Girona ahead of the 2018/19 season of the ISL.
After a disappointing show last year, the Blasters will be desperate to land elusive title this time around. They have put together some recognisable names in defence. The most prominent name that has been added to Blasters' roster this time is India international defender Anas Edathodika.
They have also signed young goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh who featured in the FIFA U-17 World Cup and India internationals Halicharan Narzary and Seimenlen Doungel.
The Sachin Tendulkar co-owned franchise is in the process of obtaining all necessary permissions for hosting the game.
Girona FC had qualified for the La Liga last season for the very first time in their 87-year-old history. In their maiden season, they finished 10th in the league. Their biggest achievement last year was beating Champions League winners Real Madrid 2-1.
