Ibom Super Four tournament is a blessing for Akwa United - Aliyu Zubairu

Despite their draw with Ibom Youths, the Promise Keepers are pleased over recovering their competitive form from the local four-team competition

Akwa United’s assistant coach Aliyu Zubairu has described the Akwa Ibom Super Four tournament as a blessing for his side despite their 1-1 draw against Ibom Youths on Wednesday.

The Nigerian Professional Football League outfit were on the brink of tasting defeat at the hands of the country’s second tier side following Nsikak Paulinus’ 25th minute opener.

But Boniface Matthew’s header off Ubong Friday’s cross four minutes from full time rescued the Promise Keepers from suffering an upset at the Uyo Township Stadium.

Despite the draw, the tactician laments impact of the World Cup break on their form, while he was full of appreciation for the organizers of the tournament.

“I gave kudos to the organizers and initiator of the tournament because it has been a blessing for us,” Zubairu told Goal.

“When we returned from the break,  we had no better chance of recovering our form but this tournament has helped us discover our weaknesses which we are already working on them.

“We were not happy with the break and It was unfortunate for us because if we had continued with our form after defeating Yobe Desert Stars, we could have found ourselves at the top.

“It is not an issue at all because we are still focused on our ambition to win the title is still on course. We hope to prepare very well in order to get a win in our next game against Kwara United.”

The draw sees Akwa United in second with one point - two behind leaders and their Thursday's opponents Akwa Starlets, who secured a 2-1 opening win over Cofine FC.
