One of the reasons why football is loved globally is due to its unpredictability. When most people saw that the Netherlands were drawn with Germany and France for their Nations League group, not many would have given them a chance.
In fact such gloominess surrounding the Dutch’s chances were understandable especially how after they seem to be in a complete mess after the 2014 World Cup. The Dutch were in complete disarray as they failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and continued that trend as they missed out on the 2018 World Cup.
Many lamented the state of Holland’s national team as managers came and go unable to find a solution to their woes. However it seems Ronald Koeman may have the magic wand as his charges displayed it against Germany by securing a comeback.
It has been a while since we saw such a spirited Dutch display led by Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk at the Veltins-Arena. Van Dijk also grabbed the headlines not just for his late goal which salvaged a 2-2 draw for his nation, but for consoling the referee of the game, who had just lost his mother.
Moving forward it will be hoped that the Netherlands can continue such performances and qualify for the Euros in 2020. After all the world has missed those iconic orange kits.
