The Egyptian Football Association (Efa) has stated that they are looking for a coach with a track record of winning titles to replace Argentine coach Hector Cuper.
The 62-year-old former Valencia and Inter Milan boss was sacked after leading Egypt in Russia.
A woeful outing cemented the Egyptians' grim World Cup record of having never won a match in all three tournaments they have taken part in. Those were in 1934, 1990 and the recently completed campaign in Russia 2018.
Expected to extend his contract soon after the World Cup, Cuper’s three-year Pharaohs tenure took a twist after losing to Uruguay, hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia in Group A.
According to the Efa, there has already been overwhelming interest for the Egypt job.
Efa president Hany Abo Rida said experience in coaching African teams is not enough in settling for the new coach as they are prioritising a decorated mentor.
“We are looking into many CVs and we will draw up a final shortlist of three coaches,” Al-Ahram quoted Abo Rida as saying.
“It’s not necessary to hire a coach who has experience in African football, but we will bring in a coach who at least won a title before.”
Cuper’s tactics, especially the defensive and counter-attacking strategies drew fierce criticism from Egypt fans and commentators alike, as having failed to tap the best out of star forward Mohamed Salah.
Morocco coach Herve Renard is one of the coaches being linked with the Pharaohs job, cementing his status as the most sought after mentor in Africa. He's received interest from Algeria and Cameroon too.
