Tengku Amir to handle rogue Selangor faction by the book

Despite the challenge put up by a rogue faction within the Selangor FA (FAS), which demanded that its president Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah accept its choice of election 'winners', the FAS chief is confident that his own faction will emerge triumphant.

Last Thursday, a breakaway faction within the association held an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur in order to elect a new deputy president, vice presidents and executive council (exco) members. Although they chose to retain the Raja Muda (crown prince) of the state of Selangor as its president, they reportedly held the meeting out of their unhappiness at Tengku Amir's choice of general secretary, deputies and exco members, after he was voted in as Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal's successor in an earlier EGM back in June.

On Saturday, Tengku Amir and the current association exco held a press conference at the Mestika Palace, Shah Alam, and claimed that the Thursday meeting held no legal standings, according to the association's constitution.

Speaking in the press conference, general secretary Johan Kamal Hamidon said that despite there initially having been a majority support for the second EGM, many of the association members later withdrew this support, leaving only 10 of its 121 members in support of a fresh election.

And he added that in a November 7 meeting between both factions, that also saw the participation of the Malaysian Sports Commission and the Malaysian FA, the breakaway faction could not produce any proof of the support that it claims to receive.

While expressing his refusal to acknowledge the claims made by the group which he described as "kurang ajar" (Malay for insolent), Tengku Amir also said that he regretted that a lot of the time that should have been spent by the association on organisational restructuring and preparing for the 2019 season, has been wasted on the infighting instead.

"What I'm most upset about is that we've wasted the past month, and for what? For no reason.

"We should be focusing on our first team, on looking for sponsors. Instead the sponsors have been scared away by all the infighting," said Tengku Amir, who is also known by fans as RMS.

When asked by a journalist on why he isn't taking more aggressive action against the belligerent faction, he answered that he is determined to do everything by the book.

"We have to go by the FAS statutes, we have to go over them again and discuss the matter with our legal team. I have to maintain FAS, and I want to do it by adhering to the rules and statutes.

"My style of working is to do the work first, and only to talk about what happened afterwards," he stated.

But the FAS chief is confident that the matter will be put to rest soon, revealing that special announcements will be made in December.

"We have control, we have confidence, and we are fixing FAS.

"I'm happy to announce that a FAS family day will be held on December 16... Some interesting announcements will be made on that day," said the 27-year old.
