Chemelil skipper happy at positive start to the season

Kakamea Homeboyz goalkeeper John Waw.

Chemelil Sugar goalkeeper, John Waw was left with a big smile on the face after he guided the Millers to a positive start to the new season with a win over Tusker.

Waw, who is among the senior players at Chemelil, guided the youthful side to a 2-0 win over immediate former champions in the opening match of the 2018 Kenyan Premier League match on Saturday.

Having begun the season with a clean sheet against a team of Tusker’s calibre, Waw said the result could not have come at a better time for the side that narrowly survived relegation last season.

While the final result was a good start to Waw who was appointed the captain last January, it was a different script for Tusker coach, Sam Timbe whose second return to the KPL was met with a shock defeat at Chemelil Sports Complex.

“Am happy to have kept a clean sheet in my first game of the season and especially against a big team like Tusker.

“The win is a big morale booster to the players considering that we have a youthful side,” Captain Waw told Goal in a post-match interview.

Clifford Omondi and assistant captain, Philip Muchuma both scored to hand Chemelil a strong start to the season.

Omondi headed home Chemelil's opener from a corner before Muchuma headed again past David Okello for a second goal to hand the millers all the available three points.

KPL season opener results: Ulinzi Stars 4-2 Zoo Kericho FC, Chemelil 2-0 Tusker FC, Gor Mahia 4-0 Nakumatt FC, Nzoia Sugar 0-1 Kariobangi Sharks, Wazito 1-0 Sony Sugar, Posta Rangers 1-1 AFC Leopards.
