Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung has explained why the club fired coach Giovanni Solinas.

Although Motaung stated that the Italian coach failed to deliver a major trophy, he said they don't regret hiring him.

“It takes time to (adapt), even with Solinas, he needed another year or two to adapt. However, with the way results were coming they were not going to allow him to adapt,” Motaung said to the media.

Solinas’ appointment raised question marks regarding his credentials and Motaung has admitted that they took a gamble because the former Free State Stars mentor has never coached a club as big as Amakhosi.

“We knew when we hired him that he had not coached in a big club. It was an opportunity for him because we don’t just say we need a big name,” he said.

“We do take coaches through the history of the club. But people have different personalities and we had to protect him and make sure that we part ways whilst it’s still okay for him. We could see that we were going to have a problem again,” he added.

Chiefs have since roped in Ernst Middendorp as the Solinas' successor and the German will be assisted by Shaun Bartlett.

Middendorp will be in charge when Amakhosi host SuperSport United on Wednesday in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) match at the Mbombela Stadium.

“We don’t regret appointing him. The man ticked all the right boxes when we sat down and interviewed him, but unfortunately in football results must be produced on the field. The relationship of the coach and players is key at the end as it is the one that takes the team forward,” responded Motaung.

“We found out that there was a bit of a challenge in that aspect as players were not responding. We also didn’t want to go through what we went through last season, and we have to respect the supporters,” he concluded.
