Barcelona are taking Lionel Messi at his word when it comes to retiring at the club, as they wait on a contract renewal.

Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu was once again quizzed on the future of his star man at a recent Barca Foundation event.

Uncomfortable questions continue to be asked as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is yet to commit to an extension to a deal which is due to expire in 2018.

Allowing that agreement to run down is unthinkable for Barca, but both sides of the discussions have expressed a desire to prolong their association and Bartomeu maintains that terms will be agreed once Messi is ready.

He said: “Messi wants to retire at Barcelona and whenever [the renewal] happens, it will happen.

“For now I refer you to the words of the man himself.”

Messi recently told Tencent Sports that he intends to see out his playing days at Camp Nou and retire as a one-club man.

He said: "It's what I always wanted and dreamed. I would love to finish my career at Barcelona.”

Messi first linked up with Barca at the age of 13 and progressed through their famed La Masia academy system to break into the first team at 16.

He has gone on to make 507 appearances for the club, netting a record-breaking 583 goals.

Reports suggest that he is looking for a lucrative new contract that would raise his weekly salary to the £504,000 mark, while increasing his buyout clause to £348 million.

Messi last committed to fresh terms at Barca in 2014.
