AZ Alkmaar explain exit of Ghana target Luckassen

AZ Alkmaar technical director Max Huiberts has made an interesting revelation about the sale of Derrick Luckassen to PSV Eindhoven, saying the defender was bound to move this year.

The utility man completed a transfer to the Red and Whites on Monday, signing a five-year deal.

Until the move, Luckassen had spent all his senior club career at AZ following his professional bow against Dordrecht in 2014.

"We were aware of Derrick's ambitions to make this year the next step in his career," Huiberts said.

"With PSV, there was a club that also wanted to meet the terms of AZ.

"Since his youth education, Derrick has made good progress every year in his development.

"We wish him success in his further career."

Luckassen made 35 Eredivisie appearances, all starts, and netted three times as AZ finished sixth last season.

He also made 12 outings, all starts, in the Europa League same campaign.

Born to Ghanaian parents in Amsterdam, the 22-year-old remains eligible to represent the Black Stars at senior level although he currently plays for the Dutch youth side.
