Al-Ahly have received an injury scare to goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy ahead of Friday’s Caf Champions League final, first leg match against Esperance at home.

El-Shanawy was withdrawn from the Al-Wasl match as a precaution and will be closely monitored in the build-up to the final.

“Dr. Khaled Mahmoud, the doctor of the first team confirmed that Mohammed Al-Shenawy, the goalkeeper, suffered a bruise in the groin during his team meeting against Al-Wasl of UAE,” said the club on their official website.

“The technical team preferred not to continue Al-Shenawy in the game in order to preserve him and not to worsen his injury. The Ahly coach decided to rest El-Shenawy immediately after sustaining the injury to prepare him for the Caf Champions League final.”

The match at the Borg El Arab Stadium will see Al-Ahly missing Nigerian striker Junior Ajayi who has failed to recover from injury in time for the final.

There is still uncertainty over defender Mohamed Naguib’s availability for the final.

However there is good news for Al-Ahly coach Patrice Carteron as midfielder Islam Mohareb will return for the match against Esperance after getting injured in the semifinals against ES Setif.
