Commentary

That's all from St Mary's today, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!
While Burnley next host Tottenham in an EFL Cup clash on Wednesday, they visit Brentford next weekend in a match already taking on the significance of a 'must-win' game. Southampton are at home again next Friday, as they host an ailing Aston Villa side - offering a chance to build on a tally of four points from the last possible six.
Still with only one victory between the sides this term, Southampton and Burnley belied their league positions to lay on some entertaining fare at St Mary's today, but neither will ultimately be satisfied with a point. Cornet was the decisive figure for the away side, as two fine finishes showed why the Clarets made the Ivorian their joint-record signing, while Livramento's influence faded under the restraint of some tighter marking in the second half, but the young full-back has a bright future ahead with the Saints.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 2-2 BURNLEY
90' + 3' McNeil does well to avoid conceding a corner under heavy pressure, and a Burnley throw-in deep inside their half provides the perfect chance to take a breather and run the clock down.
M. Vydra
C. Wood
90' + 1' With his last throw of the dice, Dyche brings on Vydra for Wood up front.
90' + 1' In the first of four minutes of stoppage time, the home side are pressing forward for a winner, with Burnley pinned back inside their defensive third.
A. Armstrong
N. Redmond
89' Redmond has put in a good shift - but also missed an absolute sitter - and the Saints forward is now withdrawn for Adam Armstrong, who has failed to score since the opening day.
88' Going alone when other options were better placed, Gudmundsson gets off a shot from 20 yards, which is deflected up into the grateful gloves of McCarthy. This game could yet go either way!
86' The unmarked Adams diverts a header well over the bar, as a cross from the right arrived just behind him, making it a relatively difficult chance.
84' Again in space just outside the Burnley box, Diallo drills an swerving effort on target, causing McCarthy to scramble across his goal line and stop the shot.
83' Untroubled, McCarthy saves a Rodriguez header from the centre of the box, following Westwood's cross.
M. Elyounoussi
Yellow Card
81' Elyounoussi brings Lowton down on the left wing and subsequently receives a yellow card from the referee.
80' McCarthy has to be alert in order to intervene when Gudmundsson streaks into the box, looking to pounce on a loose ball.
C. Adams
A. Broja
79' Broja is substituted after scoring in back-to-back games for Southampton, and Adams returns to the fray following time out through injury.
J. Guðmundsson
M. Cornet
77' Cornet has made a significant impact on the game, but is now replaced by Gudmundsson for the final few minutes.
S. Armstrong
T. Walcott
74' The ineffective Walcott comes off to be replaced by Stuart Armstrong, who jogs on to a warm round of applause from the home fans.
72' Westwood evades a second yellow, when he almost trips and then finally halts Broja illegally, offering Southampton a chance to deliver into the box from an advanced position on the right.
A. Westwood
Yellow Card
72' Receiving the second Burnley booking in a matter of minutes, Westwood is now cautioned for a challenge on Romeu near the centre circle.
J. Rodriguez
Yellow Card
70' Not long on the pitch, Rodriguez gives away a needless free-kick and is shown a yellow card for a rugged foul on Elyounoussi.
J. Rodriguez
J. Cork
69' One ex-Saint is replaced by another for Burnley, as Cork makes way for Rodriguez in an apparently attacking move from Sean Dyche.
67' Burnley have dropped back into their familiar defensive shape, as a slowing Southampton struggle to pull them apart like they did almost at will for 10 minutes either side of the break.
65' Westwood thumps a shot past the far post with a drive from the right side of the area, and Burnley have continued to pose more of a threat during the past 10 minutes.
63' Pope is well positioned to comfortably collect a low Redmond shot, which made it through a thicket of Burnley bodies but was never likely to find the net.
61' GOOD EFFORT! A firm left-footed strike from the edge of the area drifts just over the bar from the boot of McNeil, who has switched back out onto the flank in this second half.
59' Southampton are immediately back in search of another goal, but cannot create any pressure from a corner conceded by Taylor, who has had a tough time on the left today.
A. Westwood
Assist
57' Westwood played the ball in for Cornet to turn and smash the equaliser into the Southampton net.
M. Cornet
Goal
57' STUNNING STRIKE! Burnley are back level, as Cornet takes a bouncing ball early to volley past Pope on the turn from 20 yards out. A rare moment of quality in and around the area for the visitors gets them back in this pulsating game! It's now 2-2!
54' Taylor does just enough to usher the ball safely out for a goal kick under pressure from Redmond, following a cute ball from Romeu. Meanwhile, on the touchline, Burnley appear to be readying at least one change.
52' Diallo takes the ball into an advanced area, but his unconvincing shot is slashed wide of Pope's left-hand post. Southampton are well on top and Burnley are coming unstuck once again.
I. Diallo
Assist
50' Diallo stayed cool to divert Tarkowski's misplaced pass into the route of Broja, who then finished with aplomb.
A. Broja
Goal
50' SOUTHAMPTON TAKE THE LEAD! Burnley captain Tarkowski gifts the ball to Diallo outside the Burnley box, and the alert midfielder immediately feeds Broja, who powers home Saints' second from the left side of the area. Southampton 2-1 Burnley!
47' Brownhill badly mishits a cross well wide of the goal, following in the manner of Burnley's final-third delivery so far - Lowton's cross for their goal aside.
46' We are back under way at a now-sunny St Mary's!
Chelsea's academy player of the year last term, Livramento has not only scored Southampton's goal from one of his two shots - the other struck the post - but also won two free-kicks and created a couple of chances in the first half. It has been a fine performance from the flying full-back so far.
While Southampton have dominated the ball against a Burnley side who have been happy to let them have it, they come in at half-time relieved to be level, having spurned some good chances. The hosts gradually went through the gears following their concession of the opening goal, and a long spell of pressure told when star performer Livramento - who should also share a portion of blame for Cornet's goal - deservedly bagged the equaliser.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 BURNLEY
45' + 1' Pope rises highest to pluck a lofted Redmond corner out of the air, as the first half comes towards its conclusion.
44' Burnley are unable to make the most of a corner conceded by the back-tracking Broja, as a rare chance to re-establish their lead goes begging.
J. Cork
Yellow Card
42' Livramento is causing havoc here, as the goalscorer is desperately pulled back by ex-Saint Cork, who is then booked by the referee.
N. Redmond
Assist
41' Redmond makes up for his awful miss just minutes ago, by slinging in an accurate cross from the corner to set up the equaliser.
V. Livramento
Goal
41' SAINTS ARE LEVEL! After a period of intense pressure, the inspired Livramento cracks open the Burnley back four once again, directing a header into the net from Redmond's excellent corner. It is now Southampton 1-1 Burnley!
39' OFF THE POST! Saints turn up the pressure, as another Livramento run sees the young full-back cut inside Taylor and curl a shot against Pope's right-hand post. So close for Southampton!
37' WHAT A MISS! Broja does brilliantly to work his way into the Burnley area, crossing accurately for Redmond who waits at the back post. However, the Southampton forward somehow turns the ball wide from just five yards out!
36' Walcott stuns the ball from a left wing cross by Redmond, just outside the area, but his shot is steered wide of the target.
35' Brownhill goes down under pressure from Bednarek, relieving some pressure on the Burnley area, as the visitors hope to cling on until half-time.
33' SHARP SAVE! McCarthy reacts to a deflection off Salisu to deny a close range attempt by Wood down to his left, conceding a corner. Some excellent build-up play from Cornet and McNeil set up the Kiwi striker, and almost had Burnley two up from two shots on goal!
31' From an acute angle, with the ball bouncing to an awkward height, Perraud takes the wrong option and fires a shot well over from the left side of the area.
29' Collins has been busy keeping Livramento's crosses at bay, and the Burnley defender clears another under pressure. As the ball is recycled, a looping Elyounoussi header from the centre of the box clips the very edge of the post as it drifts wide.
27' Following a perceptive pass from Diallo, charging down the left, Perraud wastes a good crossing opportunity and wildly overhits the ball out of play.
25' Collins gets himself in between the ball and his goal, doing enough to stop Broja's close range volley, following an outswinging Livramento cross.
23' Cornet tracks back to cover another Livramento run, but is penalised for clipping the teenager's heels. Southampton, though, quickly lose the ball and are clearly missing Ward-Prowse's passing ability in midfield so far.
21' Livramento's ball into the box from the right finds Broja, but the young striker is careless when turning and finds the chance is lost when Collins makes a timely interception.
19' Southampton are increasingly frustrated by a buoyant Burnley side, who are keeping a compact shape and forcing the hosts to pass about fruitlessly at the back.
17' Cork brings Diallo down in the centre of the pitch, but Saints can't make anything of the free-kick, as they seek a quick equaliser.
15' Burnley - who incidentally have the oldest average starting XI age in the top flight this term - have 'dropped' a joint-high 10 points from winning positions in their first eight games, so will remain cautious about their hopes of hanging on here.
M. Lowton
Assist
13' A delightfully weighted cross from the right by Lowton picks out Cornet in the box, for the Burnley forward to head home.
M. Cornet
Goal
13' BURNLEY LEAD! Against the run of play, Burnley have only their second goal from open play in the Premier League! Unmarked, Cornet leaps highest in the six-yard box to plant a header past the stranded McCarthy from Lowton's pinpoint cross. The Clarets go 1-0 up!
11' Salisu intervenes twice within a minute, the second denying Brownhill an opportunity to get into the Southampton area on the right-hand side.
9' The lively Livramento surges forward and feeds Walcott on the right, but the experienced winger dithers and his shot is charged down on the edge of the Burnley area.
7' Broja not only became the first ever Albanian to score in the Premier League last weekend, he was also the youngest player to score on his first league start for Southampton, at 20 years and 36 days.
5' Collins escapes after nearly losing the ball under pressure to the high-pressing Broja, who has been an energetic presence so far for the home side.
3' A free-kick from the right by Westwood sails aimlessly towards the safe hands of McCarthy in the Southampton goal, wasting Burnley's first opportunity to get the ball into the box.
2' Southampton are applying some early pressure, but a promising move breaks down on the edge of the Burnley area. It looks like Saints are starting with two up top - the versatile Redmond joining Broja.
1' The home side kick off, and we are under way in Southampton!
The players are out on the pitch at an overcast St Mary's, with kickoff now just moments away!
Recent precedent is in Southampton's favour for this game, as today's hosts won both home and away against Burnley in the Premier League last season, after losing five times and winning just twice against the Lancashire outfit in their 10 previous encounters.
Southampton are again without top scorer James Ward-Prowse, who serves the second match of a suspension following his dismissal against Chelsea earlier this month, but Scotland striker Che Adams is back in the fold and is fit to return to the bench. Up front, young Armando Broja scored in the win over Leeds in his first-ever Saints start, and is selected again as the hosts' lone striker. Meanwhile, Burnley boss Sean Dyche makes one change to his starting XI that lost at Manchester City, as Erik Pieters has been replaced by Charlie Taylor, recently back from injury.
SUBS: Wayne Hennessey, Jay Rodriguez, Johann Gudmundsson, Erik Pieters, Ashley Barnes, Phil Bardsley, Kevin Long, Aaron Lennon, Matej Vydra.
BURNLEY (4-4-2): Nick Pope; Matthew Lowton, James Tarkowski, Nathan Collins, Charlie Taylor; Josh Brownhill, Jack Cork, Ashley Westwood, Dwight McNeil, Chris Wood, Maxwel Cornet.
SUBS: Fraser Forster, Nathan Tella, Che Adams, Kyle Walker-Peters, Adam Armstrong, Yan Valery, Lyanco, Stuart Armstrong, Moussa Djenepo.
SOUTHAMPTON (4-1-4-1): Alex McCarthy; Valentino Livramento, Mohammed Salisu, Jan Bednarek, Romain Perraud; Oriol Romeu; Theo Walcott, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Ibrahima Diallo, Nathan Redmond, Armando Broja.
Spirits will be raised within Ralph Hasenhuttl's squad, as Southampton recorded their first win of the 2021-22 campaign last weekend, at the expense of fellow strugglers Leeds United. Burnley, though, were beaten again last time out - versus Manchester City - and will be desperate to get off the mark against a potential relegation rival today.
Searching for just their second Premier League victory of the season, Southampton play host to winless Burnley, who sit inside the relegation zone with only three points so far. Saints - four points above the Clarets - have kept two clean sheets in their last three matches at St Mary’s, but have also netted just twice in their last five home games. Meanwhile, no team in the top four tiers of English football is enduring a longer winless run than their visitors, who have failed to even score on seven occasions during that luckless 11-match streak.
Hello and welcome to live coverage of today's Premier League fixture between Southampton and Burnley at St Mary's Stadium!
