Commentary

That is all from this Premier League fixture between Norwich and Newcastle, until next time!
Howe’s side jump to ninth in the league, which is incredible considering they were battling relegation earlier in the season. Newcastle next go to Liverpool, while Norwich - who are eight points adrift of safety - next visit Aston Villa.
Newcastle make it four Premier League wins on the bounce with a comfortable 3-0 victory over strugglers Norwich. A Joelinton first-half double got the Magpies on their way, before Guiamares capitalised on a Krul error after the interval to cap a fine triumph at Carrow Road.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: NORWICH CITY 0-3 NEWCASTLE UNITED
90' + 3' CLOSE! Almiron has acres of room inside the area after a deft Willock pass but the Paraguayan slams his left-footed strike just wide of goal.
90' + 2' There have been seven Premier League goals scored by Brazilian players on Saturday, the joint-most ever by players from a single non-English nation in one day in the competition's history (also seven by French, January 2004 and Spanish, December 2012).
90' + 1' The fourth official announces there will be three minutes of added time but the home supporters are already making their way out after another abject showing. It looks like the Canaries will be back playing Championship football next season.
90' Giannoulis whips a pinpoint cross in from the left flank and Tzolis should do better as he manages to get under the ball and make no contact with a header.
89' Over Norwich’s last two campaigns in the Premier League, Pukki has scored all four of their goals against Newcastle in the competition, with the Finnish striker netting a hat-trick the last time the sides met at Carrow Road (August 2019). He looks unlikely to find the net here, though.
88' Ritchie delivers a free-kick from inside the right-hand channel, but Lascelles does not make his intended contact with a header and Norwich avert the danger.
D. Gayle
Bruno Guimarães
87' Scorer Guiamares is Howe's final change as he makes way after another excellent performance for Gayle.
85' Saint-Maximin coasts past Byram before looking for Willock, who overruns the pass and Norwich manage to intercept.
83' McLean takes matters into his own hands as he powers down the left flank and wins a corner. Rowe delivers an inswinging set-piece, but does not beat the first man and Lascelles thumps a clearance away.
82' The game is slowly heading towards its conclusion, with neither side showing much attacking impetus in the closing stages. Smith's team will remain eight points adrift of safety with defeat here, and Premier League relegation could soon be confirmed.
80' Norwich have scored twice in their last two Premier League games, beating Burnley 2-0 and losing 3-2 against Manchester United. The Canaries have not scored at least twice in three consecutive Premier League games since a run between May and August 2013.
78' CHANCE! Willock drives forward, twisting and turning to the left of goal before angling towards the bottom-left corner. Krul, though, sees it all the way and gets down quickly to save at his near post.
77' Another fantastic Guiamares pass releases Ritchie, who gets in behind before sensibly opting to play backwards. The Brazil international looks like he could cut open the Norwich defence as and when he wants to.
C. Tzolis
M. Rashica
75' Tzolis is Smith's final replacement as the forward comes on for Rashica.
M. Ritchie
J. Murphy
74' Murphy makes his way off the pitch to generous applause from his former side Norwich's supporters. Ritchie replaces the winger.
73' Pukki finds the overlapping Aarons but the substitute's first touch is poor, which allows Almiron to race back and intervene. Again, Smith's side lack the quality at the vital moment just as a chance appears.
71' Newcastle are dominating on and off the pitch on the road against Norwich, with the vocal Magpies supporters making all the noise in the right-hand corner. They are on course for their fourth straight league win, since the 5-1 thrashing at Tottenham in earlier in the month.
70' This is Norwich’s 54th Premier League game when starting the day bottom of the table, with only five teams ever playing more. 81 per cent of these matches have been over the Canaries’ two previous campaigns (44/54) – 20 in 2019-20 and 24 this season.
69' While Newcastle invested heavily in January, to think these two teams were battling for Premier League survival in recent months is astounding. The difference in quality here at Carrow Road has been sizeable, with the Magpies too clinical and well-drilled against the insipid Canaries.
M. Almirón
Joelinton
67' Almiron, who scored the only goal of the game in the win over Palace, replaces the two-goal Joelinton.
66' The industrious Joelinton is down after attempting to slide tackle Rowe in the build-up to Pukki's chance. The physios comes on to tend to the Brazilian, and it looks like Howe will soon make his first change of the game.
65' WIDE! Rowe finds a yard of space inside the right-hand channel and delicately rolls through for Pukki, who sees his right-footed drive just evade the bottom-left corner. Close for Norwich, but still no goal for the Canaries.
64' Rashica forces Lascelles into conceding a throw-in deep on the left flank. Newcastle's next task will be to maintain their clean sheet after Joelinton and Guiamares have put them in control.
62' Longstaff overlaps Saint-Maximin and looks to chip towards the far post for Willock. However, Krul is quick off his line to collect before launching a throw long in an attempt to start a Canaries counter-attack.
61' Aarons barges through the back of Targett but the referee is not interested in the left-back's appeals for a foul. Down the other end, Lascelles does well to intervene in front of Rashica and turns away for a throw-in.
60' Norwich have had four Premier League hat-tricks scored against them this season, with these being netted by Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling, Ivan Toney and Cristiano Ronaldo. No team has ever conceded five hat-tricks in a single Premier League campaign before.
59' SAVE! Joelinton goes searching for his hat-trick as he powers a right-footed drive towards the top-right corner. Krul, though, is equal to the attempt and catches the stinging effort to deny the Brazilian.
M. Aarons
C. Zimmermann
58' Zimmermann also makes way for Aarons.
J. Rowe
M. Normann
58' Smith makes a double change, the first of which sees Rowe replace Normann.
58' Murphy takes the light applause from the supporters of his former side Norwich before taking the corner. He swings towards the near post, where Willock heads off target when under pressure by Krul.
57' Guiamares swings in a free-kick towards the far post and, seemingly under no danger, McLean opts to turn behind for a corner.
56' Every Newcastle pass is being cheered by the travelling Magpies supporters and the visitors are truly dominating the abject Canaries in the second half. Smith's side are way off the pace and, when McLean eventually gets near to Saint-Maximin, the Norwich midfielder gives away a free-kick on the right flank.
54' After his match-winning double against Leicester and cool finish at Carrow Road, Guimaraes has now contributed to goals in his last three games in the Premier League (three goals, one assist).
53' CHANCE! Dowell whips a left-footed free-kick over the wall and towards the top-right corner. Dubravka, however, does brilliantly to scramble across and tip the wonderful strike away from goal.
Bruno Guimarães
Yellow Card
51' Guiamares flies into a late sliding tackle on Normann and the referee awards a free-kick in the middle of the park to Norwich, also showing the Brazil international a yellow card.
50' SAVE! Saint-Maximin attempts to get in on the act and lashes a right-footed striker towards the top-left corner. Krul, unlike his mistake for the goal, does just enough to parry away and keep the score at 3-0.
Bruno Guimarães
Goal
49' GOOOOOOOOALLLLL! 3-0 NEWCASTLE! Krul plays a terrible pass out from the back and Guiamares nips in front of McLean before delicately dinking over the Norwich goalkeeper to extend the Magpies’ advantage.
48' Saint-Maximin commits another needless foul on Hanley, the winger must be careful given he has already been cautioned in the first half.
47' Newcastle are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League matches when leading at half-time (W5, D2) dating back to August 2021 against West Ham (lost 4-2).
46' Referee Kavanagh gets the second half under way!
The first half could not have gone much better for Howe, who opted to make changes to freshen up his team but the visitors have still put in an efficient performance. Smith, meanwhile, will be bemoaning familiar issues as his Norwich team have lacked quality in both boxes again.
Norwich came racing out the blocks at Carrow Road and were unfortunate to not take an early lead when Dowell sliced over. However, Newcastle responded to punish the Canaries for not capitalising on their dominance, with a Joelinton double sending the Magpies in 2-0 up at half-time.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: NORWICH CITY 0-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED
45' + 1' There will be two minutes of added time at Carrow Road. Nearest relegation strugglers Watford are also down at Manchester City, but Norwich still sit eight points adrift of safety and they have a serious task to turn their fortunes around in the second half.
45' OVER! Joelinton offloads for the overlapping Targett, who sees his attempted cross parried away by Krul. The ball falls kindly for Longstaff, but the midfielder wastefully blasts his right-footed strike well over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
44' The resulting corner from Normann on the left comes to nothing as Dubravka collects the loose ball with ease. A Joelinton double has Norwich reeling and their Premier League fate could soon be sealed.
43' Dowell delivers an outswinging free-kick from the left flank, which evades the plethora of Norwich bodies inside the area. However, the Canaries do win a corner-kick on the left-hand side, which Normann races across to take.
42' Joelinton has scored three goals in four Premier League appearances against the Canaries.
J. Murphy
Assist
41' Murphy has the assist go to his name for Joelinton's goal, but the block from Hanley that found the Brazilian to score was the real difference in the second strike for Newcastle.
Joelinton
Goal
41' GOOOOOOOALLLL! 2-0 NEWCASTLE! Joelinton grabs a second in the simplest of fashion. Murphy breaks through the middle after a wonderful pass by Guiamares before attempting to shoot. Hanley blocks well but inadvertently turns into the path of Joelinton, who taps into the empty net to double the visitors’ lead.
A. Saint-Maximin
Yellow Card
39' Saint-Maximin hauls down Lees-Melou as the Norwich man looks to break. Unsurprisingly, the Newcastle wingers becomes the first man in the referee's book for his cynical intervention.
37' Joelinton's fortunes continue to change for the better under Howe. The Brazilian has been utilised as a midfielder after faltering up top for the Magpies, but after being tasked with leading the line here he has delivered in emphatic fashion.
A. Saint-Maximin
Assist
35' Saint-Maximin will take credit for the assist but, in fact, his pass was fortunate to find scorer Joelinton when he was trying to play in Longstaff.
Joelinton
Goal
35' GOOALLLLLL! 1-0 NEWCASTLE! Murphy rolls to Saint-Maximin, whose pass to Longstaff is poor. However, the ball rolls past Byram and finds Joelinton, who from the left of goal curls excellently into the top-right corner. What a strike from the Brazilian! VAR then has a quick check of the goal for offside before confirming it can stand.
34' Dubravka takes the pace out of proceedings as he and his defenders work possession around the back. Both sides seem content to not take the game to one another at the moment as they size out their opponent.
32' Newcastle have lost each of their last three Premier League away games, last losing more consecutively in January 2021 (five). 10 of the Magpies’ 13 points on the road this season came in a four-game spell between January and March (W3 D1).
30' Norwich are fighting for their lives in the relegation battle, but it is the lack of quality in both boxes that could prove the difference. That issue has again been their undoing here, with little to show for their efforts despite edging the first-half outing so far.
28' CLOSE! Murphy delivers the inswinging corner from the left flank towards the near post. Burn gets in front of Giannoulis and deftly flicks towards the bottom-right corner. Fortunately for the hosts, the centre-back's effort narrowly flies past the far post and out for a goal-kick.
27' Targett overlaps Saint-Maximin before trying to beat Byram for pace. The Norwich right-back, though, stands his ground and turns behind for a corner.
25' Longstaff and Normann challenge one another on the touchline for a loose ball, with the latter sustaining a little knock to his ankle. The midfielder goes down and receives some quick treatment before play gets back under way.
24' Burn is the last man and steps in at the right time to dispossess Lees-Melou. Howe will want to see his side impose themselves on this meeting, but they are yet to do so.
22' Smith's hosts have shaded the opening stages at Carrow Road, but have nothing to show for their hard work yet. Both teams just need that one spark of quality to kick the game into life.
21' Having won their first away Premier League game against Norwich 2-1 in January 1994, Newcastle are winless in their last seven top-flight visits to Carrow Road (D2 L5).
20' Saint-Maximin uses his pace to surge past two Norwich defenders, but comes unstuck as Hanley races across to outmuscle his opposite man and then a throw-in deep inside the Canaries half.
18' OVER! Lees-Melou powers past three Newcastle players before offloading to Pukki, who rounds Krul before cutting back towards the penalty spot. Dowell has just two defenders to beat on the line but miscues his right-footed strike and slices over the bar - a great chance goes begging.
16' Zimmermann is forced to turn behind as Guiamares crosses from the right flank. Targett whips in the resulting corner and, after Lascelle lays back towards the six-yard box, the Canaries manage to clear.
15' Byram beats Saint-Maximin to a loose ball inside the Newcastle area and the right-back then goes to ground. However, Norwich's slight appeals for a penalty fall on deaf ears as the referee points for a goal-kick to the visitors.
13' Willock dances inside and tries to find the diagonal run of Targett, but the pair are on different wavelengths and Smith's men intercept with ease.
12' Guiamares nips in front of Rashica, who bundles the Brazil international over. Targett wanders across to send a long free-kick towards the area but, thanks to the Canaries' high line, the hosts deal with the delivery easily.
11' Norwich are unbeaten in their last four Premier League games against Newcastle (W2 D2), having been winless in six against them previously (D2 L4).
9' CHANCE! Normann delivers an inch-perfect pass in behind Targett and Dowell races through on goal. The Norwich attacker attempts to clip over the top of the onrushing Dubravka but does not get the intended contact he was looking for and chips over the crossbar.
7' CLOSE! Newcastle almost open the scoring as Guiamares clips long for Murphy, who hits a first-time volley towards the bottom-left corner. Krul is stranded as he comes out to close down the winger, but fortunately for Norwich the strike trickles just wide.
6' Pukki is lurking in behind and Dubravka has to rush out to hook a clearance long. Down the other end, Joelinton - operating further forward than usual for Howe's side - wins a throw-in high up the pitch for his team.
5' Dowell curls down the left for the incoming Giannoulis, however, the Englishman's pass is overhit and races out for a goal-kick, which Dubravka pumps long.
3' Saint-Maximin attempts to work his magic down the left-hand side but is forced backwards by Byram's intense pressing. That head-to-head individual battle could be decisive for the Magpies and Canaries here.
2' Rashica bounds down the left flank and looks for Dowell, but a crowd of Newcastle defenders quickly respond to avert the danger.
1' Referee Chris Kavanagh gets proceedings under way at Carrow Road!
All five of Norwich’s Premier League wins against Newcastle have come in home games – no side have they beaten more at Carrow Road in the competition than the Magpies (also five vs Southampton).
Eddie Howe vowed to offer some of his players a rest in midweek and he has done so by making four alterations to his starting line-up. Lascelles, Krafth, Murphy and Willock replace Schar, Shelvey, Almiron and Wood, while Joelinton is set to make his 100th Premier League appearance.
Smith opts for just one change to his starting XI that lost at Old Trafford last game. Zimmermann comes in for Gibson, who drops to the bench.
SUBSTITUTES: Dwight Gayle, Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar, Miguel Almiron, Chris Wood, Javier Manquillo, Karl Darlow, Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Ritchie.
NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-3-3): Martin Dubravka; Emil Krafth, Dan Burn, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Targett; Joseph Willock, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes; Allan Saint-Maximin, Joelinton, Jacob Murphy.

Unlike their hosts, Newcastle have surged away from the threat of relegation, with their home form particularly impressive. The Magpies were 1-0 victors over Crystal Palace last time out as they collected their sixth straight win at St James’ Park.
Norwich prop up the bottom of the league after a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick condemned them to a 3-2 defeat at Manchester United last time out. It is edging towards now or never territory for Dean Smith’s side, who are eight points adrift of safety, to escape relegation to the Championship.
