Other results didn't go Chile's way, and it means they've missed out on a chance to qualify for their third consecutive World Cup despite starting the day in third place. Colombia, Argentina and Peru have all moved ahead of them, with the latter narrowly squeezing ahead of them on goal difference to go through to the play-offs.
In the end, it was a relatively comfortable night for Brazil, who were able to finish what was an excellent World Cup qualifying campaign with one final victory thanks to a poor second-half performance from Chile. The visitors were sluggish up front and sloppy at the back, allowing the home side to easily find the back of the net three times and deny them a play-off place.
FULL-TIME: BRAZIL 3-0 CHILE
Willian
Assist
Brazil
90' + 3' Willian did really well to pick out Jesus with a clever lofted pass up the pitch. Bravo was desperately rushing back to deal with the danger but never had a chance of reaching his Manchester City team-mate.
Gabriel Jesus
Goal
Brazil
90' + 3' GOAL! Jesus makes it 3-0 with the final kick of the game! Bravo goes up for the last-minute corner but is caught out after it's easily dealt with by the hosts. Jesus is then set up to dart into the penalty area and towards the goal, where he literally walks the ball into the back of the net after being left all alone. Job done for the home side.
90' + 2' Medel makes a clever run towards the near post as he tries to latch onto another cross into the Brazil penalty area, but Ederson is just about able to meet the ball ahead of the centre-back and knocks the ball out for a late corner for the visitors.
90' + 1' Chile desperately knock the ball around quickly deep inside the Brazil half of the pitch as they try to find a way back into the game with a late goal. Beausejour eventually knocks a looping cross into the middle of the Brazil penalty area, but it's poorly hit and sails straight into the hands of Ederson.
90' The fourth official has indicated that there will be three minutes of added time.
89' Great save by Bravo! An attempted Chile attacking move breaks down, allowing Brazil to counter quickly. Willian bursts through the middle of the pitch on a wonderful run and then sets up Firmino, who only has Bravo to beat but can't squeeze his low shot under the goalkeeper's body.
88' Chile are seeing plenty of the ball at the moment, but they're struggling to do much with it. A deflected cross from Beausejour bounces away from the Brazil box and out to Valdivia, who tries to tee up Isla over on the right wing but loses out to a clever interception from Miranda.
Roberto Firmino
Philippe Coutinho
Brazil
87' And now Roberto Firmino has come on to take the place of Coutinho for the final few minutes of the game.
Willian
Neymar
Brazil
85' Neymar receives a rousing round of applause from the home fans as he's replaced by Willian.
84' Neymar breaks into the right-hand side of the Chile box and latches onto a great pass forward from Jesus after a lovely piece of footwork from the Manchester City youngster, but the linesman's flag is quickly raised as soon as the PSG forward knocks the ball over to Fernandinho to convert from close range.
Fernandinho
Renato Augusto
Brazil
82' Brazil have made their first substitution of the night, with Augusto making way for Fernandinho.
81' Chile are awarded another free-kick, this time midway inside the Brazil half of the pitch, and it almost results in a chance on goal after Beausejour charges down the left flank and into a pocket of space. He then fires a cross into the heart of the penalty area, but the linesman's flag is raised and brings an end to the attack.
79' What a chance for Medel! Valdivia is brought down from behind by Jesus, and Chile are presented with a really good opportunity to whip a cross into the home side's box. The number 10 steps up and curls the ball right onto the head of Medel, who rises high and sends a bullet header just over the top of the crossbar.
E. Paredes
P. Hernández
Chile
77' Chile have made one final switch, with Esteban Paredes coming on to take the place of Hernandez.
75' It just isn't working for Chile at the moment. They're causing themselves problems with poor final passes and sloppy play in the middle, with Sanchez often finding himself in good positions out wide but unable to pick out team-mates inside the penalty area.
73' Neymar hits the side-netting! Chile cheaply lose the ball in the middle of the pitch and allow Brazil to counter-attack quickly once again. Neymar breaks into the left-hand side of the penalty area and quickly gets a shot away, but it swerves the wrong side of the near post and crashes into the side-netting.
71' Sanchez twists and turns over on the left flank before firing a low cross into the Brazil box, where it's deflected behind for a corner. The cross in from the set-piece is a poor one, however, as it sails straight into the hands of Ederson.
69' Neymar goes close! The forward steps up and dinks a deft strike towards the top left-hand side of the net, but it's slightly overhit and sails a few yards over the top of the crossbar after leaving Bravo rooted to the spot.
M. Isla
Yellow Card
Chile
68' Coutinho embarks on a wonderful run as he weaves his way past two players and towards the Chile penalty area, but he's eventually brought crashing to the ground by a cynical sliding challenge from Isla and wins a free-kick for the hosts just outside of the box.
67' Puch quickly gets involved in the action as he picks up the ball in a pocket of space over on the right flank. He then tries to dance his way inside, but he can't get the better of Sandro and loses out to the Brazil left-back.
65' Yet again, Neymar is fouled as he bursts forward, resulting in another free-kick for Brazil in a promising position. It's Sandro who swings a cross into the box and over to the far post, but it's too deep and fails to pick out a team-mate in front of goal.
E. Puch
J. Fuenzalida
Chile
63' Chile have made their second change of the night, with Fuenzalida making way for Edson Puch.
62' A dangerous free-kick struck by Neymar manages to pick out Augusto at the near post, but the whistle blows for a foul inside the penalty area as soon as the midfielder unleashes a thumping strike from close range that almost makes it 3-0 to the home side.
61' It's all kicking off! Sanchez tangles with Paulinho in the middle of the pitch, resulting in a slight fracas taking place between the latter and Pablo Hernandez. The Chile man seems to grab Paulinho by the throat, but the referee doesn't see the incident and only gives the two players a stern talking to instead of reaching for a red card.
59' Sanchez almost immediately pulls a goal back! A curling corner in from the right wing fails to find a red shirt inside the Brazil box but bounces out to Sanchez, who quickly shoots but fires his low strike just wide of the far post.
Neymar
Assist
Brazil
57' That really was a wonderful piece of football from Neymar, who brought down the ball beautifully before making life easy for Jesus with his squared pass across the face of goal.
Gabriel Jesus
Goal
Brazil
57' GOAL! Now it's 2-0 to the hosts! A lovely lofted pass from Coutinho perfectly picks out Neymar, who brings down the ball over on the left-hand side of the Chile box and quickly sets up Jesus to poke in from close range. The visitors are all over the place at the back!
Paulinho
Goal
Brazil
55' GOAL! Brazil have taken the lead! Alves shoots from the free-kick and forces Bravo into making an unconvincing save, and it's one that sees him spill the ball to Paulinho and set up the midfielder to tap in from close range. The goalkeeper really should have done better with that!
A. Sánchez
Yellow Card
Chile
54' Challenges are flying in all over the place, and this time it's Sanchez who catches Casemiro with a mistimed sliding challenge from behind. Brazil are awarded a free-kick in a promising area before the Arsenal forward is shown a yellow card.
52' Brazil are doing well to see plenty of the ball deep inside the Chile half of the pitch, but they're struggling to find much joy against the visitors' back line. Their opponents have remained compact and well-organised throughout the evening, and they're doing well to keep the likes of Coutinho, Neymar and Jesus relatively quiet.
50' Neymar tries to dance his way through a group of Chile players but is caught by a mistimed challenge from Valdivia, resulting in a free-kick for Brazil in a very dangerous position. Neymar steps up and shoots, but his curling effort is well saved by Bravo without too many problems.
48' A misplaced pass from Coutinho can only find Vargas, setting up the Chile forward to embark on a quick counter-attack. He's able to reach the halfway line, but he's then clattered into by Sandro and has to settle for a free-kick.
E. Pulgar
C. Aránguiz
Chile
46' Chile have made one substitution during the half-time break, with Erick Pulgar coming on to replace Aranguiz.
46' We're underway once again!
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half.
It was a slightly sloppy first half, with both sides failing to carve out many chances on goal. Chile have arguably been the better of the two teams inside the final third of the pitch but it was Brazil who enjoyed the best opportunity to opening the scoring, with Jesus testing Bravo with a downward header after being left all alone in front of goal. It was a great chance for the Manchester City striker and one he arguably should have buried.
HALF-TIME: BRAZIL 0-0 CHILE
Neymar
Yellow Card
Brazil
45' + 1' Neymar is the second player to be cautioned after a flailing arm from the forward ends up catching Fuenzalida on the side of the head. Juan Antonio Pizzi looks slightly confused as to why the Brazil man's punishment wasn't more severe.
45' The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
44' Valdivia is dispossessed by Paulinho midway inside the Brazil half of the pitch, allowing the home side to counter quickly. Jesus quickly takes over and then works the ball over to Alves, who tries to pick out a team-mate with a chipped cross into the penalty area but can only find the hands of Bravo.
43' Another clumsy challenge from a Brazil player gifts Chile with a chance to whip the ball into the Brazil box. Aranguiz's cross in from the right flank is brilliantly positioned and picks out Sanchez, who nods the ball down towards Vargas but loses out to Ederson at the vital moment.
42' Sanchez is fouled once again, and this time it's Alves who catches the Arsenal man out wide and gives away a free-kick in a promising position. The set-piece is sent short and worked over to Jorge Valdivia, who then tries to pick out Beausejour on the edge of the box but can't quite find the full-back.
Philippe Coutinho
Yellow Card
Brazil
40' Coutinho has been flying into a few challenges so far this evening, and he's become the first player to receive a yellow card after catching Sanchez with a late tackle on the halfway line.
38' Free header for Jesus! A wonderful cross from Augusto sails into the heart of the Chile box and picks out Jesus all alone in front of goal, but, somehow, he can't beat Bravo and ends up sending his downward header straight into the hands of his Manchester City team-mate.
37' Jesus gets himself into a good position deep down the right channel as Brazil push forward on a determined attacking move, but he's closed down well by Sanchez and Beausejour and can't find a way past either, with the latter coming off the worst of the two after sliding in from behind.
35' Beausejour is caught from behind by Coutinho, and once again the visitors are presented with a good opportunity to fire a cross in from a free-kick out wide. Sanchez's cross in is a good one, but this time it's Jesus who rises high to head the ball away from the group of red shirts just behind him.
33' Sanchez makes a nuisance of himself as he bursts down the left flank, and he then manages to win Chile another corner. It's whipped in by the Arsenal forward and sails towards the near post, where, once again, Brazil are easily able to deal with the danger.
31' The Chile back line step off Neymar ever so slightly and allow the PSG man the space needed to shoot, but his 25-yard strike has slightly too much power behind it and the effort fails to trouble Bravo.
29' Coutinho peels out to the right and links up well with Paulinho before dinking a clever cross over to the far post, where Isla just about manages to rise high above Jesus to nod the ball behind for a corner that's well defended by Chile.
27' Brazil enjoy a decent spell of possession as they try to find a way through the sea of red shirts camped in front of them, but Chile remain compact and well-organised and are eventually able to regain the ball in the middle of the pitch.
25' Sanchez catches Dani Alves with a mistimed sliding challenge, leaving the referee with no choice but to award a free-kick for Brazil midway inside the visitors' half of the pitch. It's whipped in by Neymar and almost finds Paulinho, but the midfielder can't quite latch onto the ball in front of goal.
23' The first corner quickly results in a second, but, once again, Sanchez isn't qutie able to find Isla. He's able to come back again, however, and he swiftly unleashes a swerving 20-yard strike that doesn't miss the far post by much.
22' Beausejour does well to skip into the left-hand side of the Brazil penalty area and towards the byline, from where he unleashes a chipped cross over to the far post. It initially fails to pick out a team-mate before finding Vargas, who then forces Joao Miranda into conceding a corner.
21' Sloppy play from Chile once again allows Paulinho to fire another great pass up towards the edge of the visitors' box, where it finds Neymar. The forward latches on to it ahead of Gary Medel, but a heavy touch denies him the chance to shoot and means he has to settle for a corner instead.
19' Charles Aranguiz is clumsy clattered into by Alex Sandro as he tries to find a way into the Brazil penalty area, resulting in a free-kick for Chile in a very dangerous position. It's Sanchez who fires the ball in low and picks out Isla, who tries to spin and shoot but can't do so quickly enough and is eventually dispossessed.
17' Neymar cheaply loses the ball on the halfway line and gifts Chile with a chance to counter-attack over on the right wing. Jose Fuenzalida does well to get himself into a good position out wide, but he can't quite squeeze through a group of yellow shirts and has to settle for a throw-in.
15' Huge chance for Neymar! A terrible attempted clearance from Gonzalo Jara can only find a yellow shirt, allowing the home side to quickly counter-attack. Gabriel Jesus is immediately set up by Paulinho on the edge of the box and then tees up Neymar to shoot, but the Paris Saint-Germain forward's low strike is well stopped by Claudio Bravo at the near post.
13' Paulinho goes down inside the penalty area, but nothing is given! An attempted Chile attacking move breaks down, allowing Brazil to counter quickly. Neymar sprints into the left-hand side of the box and tries to set up Paulinho to shoot, but the midfielder loses his footing before he's able to. He immediately screams for a penalty, but the referee isn't at all interested and waves play on.
12' Sanchez is clumsily bundled over by Paulinho, resulting in a free-kick for Chile in a promising position out wide. The Arsenal man steps up and side-foots a looping cross into the box, but it's slightly overhit and sails straight into Ederson's hands.
11' Alexis Sanchez picks up the ball deep inside the Brazil half of the pitch and quickly tries to tee up Jean Beausejour to whip in a cross from the left wing, but Marquinhos reads the danger well and is there to knock the ball back to Ederson.
9' A clever pass from Neymar penetrates the Chile penalty area and manages to pick out Philippe Coutinho, who tries to spin round two defenders but runs out of pitch and ends up giving away a goal-kick instead.
7' Brazil keep the danger alive and win themselves another corner, this time over on the right flank. It's well defended by the visitors but only cleared as far as Renato Augusto, who quickly shoots but curls his 25-yard strike several yards over the crossbar.
5' Neymar makes a marauding run down the left wing as Brazil try to carve out their first opportunity on goal, but he's dispossessed from behind by a well-timed sliding tackle from Mauricio Isla and has to settle for a corner that's well defended by Chile.
3' After an even start to the game from both sides, it's Chile who enjoy the first chance on goal. A curling cross is swung in from deep down the right flank and manages to pick out Eduardo Vargas, who gets his head to the ball and forces Ederson Moraes into making his first save in senior international football.
1' We're off! Chile get us underway, attacking from right to left.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Meanwhile, Chile boss Juan Antonio Pizzi has made three alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Eugenio Mena, Arturo Vidal and Francisco Silva making way for Jean Beausejour, Jose Fuenzalida and Charles Aranguiz.
Tite has decided to make two changes to the Brazil side that started the goalless draw with Bolivia last week, with Ederson Moraes and Marquinhos coming into the starting line-up to replace Alisson and Thiago Silva, respectively.
Chile substitutes: Mena, Roco, Pulgar, Pavez, Puch, Cortes, Diaz, Gutierrez, Valencia, Rodriguez, Paredes, Herrera.
Chile XI (4-3-1-2): Bravo; Isla, Medel, Jara, Beausejour; Fuenzalida, Aranguiz, Hernandez; Valdivia; Vargas, Sanchez.
Brazil substitutes: Alisson, Jemerson, Tardelli, Jorge, Caio, Cassio, Fernandinho, Fred, Willian, Arthur, Firmino, Danilo.
Brazil XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Alves, Marquinhos, Miranda, Sandro; Paulinho, Casemiro, Augusto; Coutinho, Jesus, Neymar.
There’s just under 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Chile are the only side to have picked up a win against Brazil during the qualifying campaign, but so far they haven’t looked entirely convincing away from home. They’ve only managed to record victories against Peru and Venezuela when on the road, with four of their previous five away encounters ending in disappointing defeats for Juan Antonio Pizzi’s men.
As for Chile, they desperately need to pick up a victory of their own if they’re to guarantee themselves a place at next year’s tournament. They start the night in third place with 26 points but, due to the congested nature of the table, could drop as low as seventh if results don’t go their way. A defeat combined with wins for Argentina, Paraguay and either Peru or Colombia would deny them a World Cup place for the first time since 2006.
Whatever happens tonight, Brazil won’t be moving from the summit of the South American qualifying table, but one final victory would be a fitting way for such an impressive team to finish the campaign. Tite has done an excellent job since taking control of the reins in June 2016, and since then they’ve failed to lose a single competitive fixture, with nine of the 11 games ending in wins.
Somewhat understandably, Brazil have taken their foot off the pedal slightly since becoming the first team to confirm their place at next year’s World Cup, resulting in them drawing their last two games against Colombia and Bolivia. Tonight’s clash sees them return to home soil in search of one final win to end the qualifying campaign with 41 points, the highest amount anyone’s ever achieved since Argentina in 2001.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s World Cup 2018 qualifier between Brazil and Chile at the Allianz Parque.
