Villa and Burnley must now prepare themselves for the final day of the season. Villa travel to face Manchester City and Burnley host Newcastle United. It'll be a nail-biting one for the Clarets especially. That's all for now. Goodbye!
Villa stay 14th in the Premier League table with only a faint chance of a top-half finish. They had 22 shots here, their highest total in a Premier League match this season, but couldn't beat an inspired Pope. Burnley rise to 17th, ahead of Leeds on goal difference. If the point they've just gained is the one that keeps them up, they'll have Pope to thank.
It's honours even between Villa and Burnley at Villa Park, but either side could have won this. Villa will be disappointed not to have taken all three points after coming back from behind. Pope was in great form for Burnley though. The Clarets could have sealed a vital win through Weghorst but for Mings' magnificent block. Lowton's sending off in injury time came too late to change the result.
90' + 7' FULL-TIME: ASTON VILLA 1-1 BURNLEY
90' + 5' Villa force one more corner down their right. Burnley manage to see it out. Lennon darts down the wing and is stopped unfairly by Cash. That eats up a few more seconds, and the final whistle eventually blows!
90' + 3' Burnley may be down to 10 men, but they'll be damned if they let the draw slip from here. Cork buys another free-kick from Buendia.
M. Lowton
Red Card
90' + 1' RED CARD FOR BURNLEY! Lowton arrives late on Chambers and takes the Villa centre-back out. It's a nasty tackle on first viewing, albeit one made more in desperation than malice. VAR watches it back a few times and agrees with the referee's decision to send the Burnley substitute off.
90' There'll be at least four more minutes of this. Burnley would probably take the point right now if you offered it to them. They could easily be going home with all three but for Mings' brilliant block.
89' Villa come close to finding a winner only to be denied by Pope! Ings latches onto Buendia's throughball to fire towards the bottom left corner. Pope closes the angle to keep the shot out. Digne crosses from the corner for Cash, whose effort whistles towards the top right corner. That's also stopped by Pope.
88' Pope is getting called into action more frequently now. The Burnley keeper catches McGinn and Coutinho's powerful efforts from outside the box.
86' From Burnley's latest corner, Lennon goes for goal from outside the box. That's an easier save for Martinez. Burnley will be cursing their luck though.
85' What a chance for Burnley! Taylor's cross from the left finds Roberts, who shoots from very close range! Martinez saves but can't control the ball. Roberts cuts the rebound back for Weghorst, but Mings makes a spectacular block to stop the Dutchman's shot from going in! That looked like it would be a certain goal for the visitors. Instead they have to settle for a corner.
M. Lowton
M. Cornet
85' Burnley bring on an extra defender to shore things up. Lowton replaces Cornet.
84' Buendia is too forceful in holding off Cork and gives away a free-kick in Burnley's half. Burnley will be grateful for the opportunity to take a breather.
82' Villa are even more dominant now than they were in the first half. Burnley are just about hanging on, but they're surely starting to tire.
80' Pope preserves Burnley's parity with a fine diving save! Traore leaps up to reach Chambers' cross into the box and nod it at goal. Burnley's shotstopper gets low to push the header away
A. Lennon
D. McNeil
79' Burnley substitution. Lennon replaces McNeil.
78' Ings almost gives Villa the lead with his first touch! The Englishman lashes just wide of the left-hand post from outside the box.
D. Ings
O. Watkins
78' Villa substitution. Ings takes Watkins' place up front for the hosts.
76' Everton are beating Palace 3-2 with a few minutes left to play! They've come back from 2-0 down! That would secure their Premier League survival, and leave just Burnley and Leeds at risk of relegation on the final day. Burnley's day could still get worse as Coutinho has a shot blocked.
74' Now Villa get a corner. They take it short and work it to Watkins. The England striker turns and smashes the ball straight at Pope from inside the box. Pope hands Villa another corner. Traore fires comfortably wide from it.
73' Digne fires well wide with his left foot from outside the box. Villa still look the more likely winners of this match.
Philippe Coutinho
J. Ramsey
71' Villa make a substitution of their own. Coutinho replaces Ramsey.
W. Weghorst
A. Barnes
71' Meanwhile, Burnley make a change. Their goalscorer Barnes goes off. Weghorst comes on.
70' NO PENALTY FOR BURNLEY! After some thought, the officials at Stockley Park decide that Digne has done nothing wrong. It does look like the ball hit the Frenchman's chest rather than his arm, which was outstretched.
69' The corner comes in. Long heads wide and Barnes swings at thin air, but there's a big Burnley shout for handball! Did Digne handle the loose ball? VAR takes a long look at the incident...
67' Burnley are enjoying another positive spell. Digne brings down Roberts but the free-kick doesn't trouble Villa too much. The Clarets keep pushing and earn themselves a corner down their left, which turns into another.
65' Everton have equalised against Crystal Palace. It's 2-2 at Goodison Park. A draw here would still be good enough to get Burnley out of the bottom three, but they could do with Everton losing to keep the Toffees close by in the table.
63' Barnes speculatively smashes a loose ball in Villa's box against a defender. The ball pops up for Brownhill, who forces a low save from Martinez.
61' Traore checks onto his left foot and crosses into the box. It's nothing that Burnley can't handle. Cash blazes over from distance.
59' Cork bundles over Buendia in Burnley's half. That'll be a Villa free-kick.
B. Traoré
C. Chukwuemeka
57' Villa make their first substitution of the game. The quiet Chukwuemeka is replaced by Traore.
K. Long
Yellow Card
55' Long's booked for his clumsy foul on Watkins. Burnley are facing a test of mental fortitude now.
54' Watkins races in behind Long towards the corner flag and gets clipped by the Burnley centre-back.
52' Now that Villa have equalised, they're wasting no time in chasing a second goal. Buendia's tripped by Brownhill. Burnley are rocking.
50' Buendia's now scored in back-to-back starts in the Premier League for the first time. Both have been against Burnley. The ex-Norwich player hasn't had the best first season for Villa, but his potential's clear to see.
J. McGinn
Assist
48' McGinn's ball in was just begging to be hit, and, boy, did Buendia hit it! It's no less than Villa deserve on the balance of play.
E. Buendía
Goal
48' GOAL! ASTON VILLA 1-1 BURNLEY! Buendia makes amends for giving a penalty away with a sublime finish! The Argentine ghosts into the box to volley McGinn's right-wing cross into the turf and past Pope! That's another twist in the tale at the bottom of the Premier League.
47' Taylor gets in the way of Cash's smashed cross-cum-shot. Villa aren't going to take defeat as a given, that's for sure.
46' Burnley get the second half going. If the score stays like this for another 45 minutes, they'll be very pleased.
Burnley have scored with their first shot on target of the match, and what a vital goal it could be with Everton currently losing 2-0 at home to Crystal Palace. The Clarets are unbeaten in their last five league games when leading at half-time. They've never lost a Premier League away game from this position. Holding on for the win here would be absolutely massive for them.
This game's not looking the best for Everton and Leeds United at the moment. Villa have been the more proactive side, dominating possession if not creating the best chances. Burnley have dug in though and have capitalised on Buendia's error to take the lead through Barnes' penalty. We've got a big second half coming up!
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: ASTON VILLA 0-1 BURNLEY
45' + 1' There'll be one added minute at the end of this half. The Burnley fans are understandably making plenty of noise now!
A. Barnes
Penalty Goal
45' GOAL! ASTON VILLA 0-1 BURNLEY! Barnes sends Martinez the wrong way and slots the ball calmly into the bottom left corner of the net! What a big goal that could be in the context of the relegation battle! It's Barnes' first Premier League goal since February last year.
43' PENALTY FOR BURNLEY! Cornet's switch of feet in the box tricks Buendia into catching the Ivorian's standing leg. The referee immediately points to the spot! This could potentially be huge for Burnley.
42' Burnley are ending the first half on the front foot. Collins draws a foul from Chukwuemeka to give the visitors another chance to test Villa from a free-kick.
40' Buendia barges over Taylor near his own corner flag. Burnley's free-kick is headed up in the air by McGinn, fumbled by Martinez, and cleared by Ramsey.
38' Burnley repel Villa's latest attack, eventually getting an offside decision in their favour. The visitors are holding their own at the moment.
37' Cornet makes a nuisance of himself and flashes the ball across the face of goal from the right of the box. Barnes can't reach the cross in time to do anything with it. It may have even been a shot.
35' Watkins stoops low to nod Cash's deep cross way over the crossbar. Villa are creating plenty of half-chances, but not many clear-cut ones.
34' Chukwuemeka trips McNeil to hand Burnley a free-kick on the edge of the final third. Villa deal comfortably with McNeil's delivery and the ball ends up with Martinez.
32' Villa keep the pressure on and force another corner. They take it short and Chambers skies the resulting cross.
30' McGinn chests the ball down on the edge of the box, holding off Long, and spanks a venomous half-volley towards goal. Pope is in the right place to tip it out for a corner, which the Burnley goalkeeper catches easily.
29' Villa turn this latest corner into another one. This time Buendia, one of Villa's shorter players, can't keep his header down.
28' Buenda slips Cash into the box. Taylor positions himself well to block the Poland right-back's cross. Villa get a corner.
26' Villa continue their positional dominance. Burnley are doing a good job of limiting their space in behind though.
24' Villa pop the ball around in midfield. Burnley respond by dropping off. Cash creates a yard for himself to the right of the box and fires over the crossbar.
22' Villa clear the corner. They've started this game the better side, but that little attacking spell will give Burnley confidence.
20' Brownhill swings the ball towards the far post for Barnes, whose header is put out for a corner. It comes out to McNeil, who smashes a shot against the head of Cash. It'll be another Burnley corner.
18' Villa have had 77 per cent possession of the ball so far. Burnley are having to focus entirely on defending at the moment.
16' Chance for Villa! The hosts force a corner down their right. It's taken short to McGinn, who curls the ball towards the top left corner with his left foot. Pope tips the shot aside for another corner which Burnley clear.
14' Ramsey dribbles through the middle, plays a one-two, and has a pop at goal from inside the D. It's blocked. Cash surges towards the byline but doesn't have a clear path to goal.
12' Coutinho, now a permanent Villa player, is watching the game unfold from the bench. No doubt the Brazilian will hope to come on at some point.
10' Digne's cross from the left is flicked towards goal by Buendia. It deflects out for a Villa corner. Cornet and Barnes try to lead Burnley's charge forward on the counter but can't make it out of their own half without being intercepted.
9' Digne fails to keep an ambitious crossfield pass in play. Villa are looking focused and motivated.
8' Mings regains possession for Villa but can't pick out Watkins up the other end of the pitch. Cork catches Ramsey to give away a free-kick.
6' Cornet's corner delivery is poor and sails harmlessly out of play to cheers from the home fans. The less said about that, the better.
5' Barnes goes into an aerial challenge with Mings and leaves the Villa captain winded on the floor. Mings is made of stern stuff though and soon gets to his feet. Meanwhile, Burnley have earned a corner down their right.
4' Chambers lofts a direct pass over the top for one of his forwards to chase. They're not on the same wavelength as the centre-back though, and Burnley gratefully accept the goal-kick. Gerrard yells advice to his players.
2' Villa manage to turn their corner into another. Burnley manage to deal with that too, but they're under pressure at the start of this game.
1' Villa get an early free-kick down their left-hand side. It lands at the far post to Buendia, whose speculative shot is blocked. The Argentine finds the space to fire in a second cross and Collins hooks it safely over the crossbar to concede a corner.
1' The hosts Villa get this midweek game underway!
After their 3-1 win at Turf Moor earlier this month, Villa are looking to do their first league double over Burnley since 1925-26. However, Burnley have lost just one of their last seven league visits to Villa Park and are unbeaten in their last three. Can the Clarets get the result they need to put them in a good position come the final day?
Burnley's caretaker boss Mike Jackson largely keeps the faith with the team that started the narrow 1-0 defeat away to Tottenham last weekend. Their only change sees fit-again Tarkowski replace Lowton in the starting lineup.
Steven Gerrard makes four changes to Villa from their 1-1 draw with Palace last time out. Chambers, Ramsey, Buendia and Chukwuemeka come in. Watkins continues up front after scoring three goals in his last four Premier League home games.
SUBS: Dara Costelloe, Matthew Lowton, Dale Stephens, Owen Dodgson, Wout Weghorst, Wayne Hennessey, Aaron Lennon, Bobby Thomas, Phil Bardsley.
BURNLEY (3-5-2): Nick Pope; Kevin Long, Nathan Collins, James Tarkowski (c); Connor Roberts, Josh Brownhill, Jack Cork, Dwight McNeil, Charlie Taylor; Maxwel Cornet, Ashley Barnes.
SUBS: Ashley Young, Robin Olsen, Bertrand Traore, Marvelous Nakamba, Tim Iroegbunam, Morgan Sanson, Danny Ings, Josh Feeney, Philippe Coutinho.
ASTON VILLA (4-3-1-2): Emiliano Martinez; Matthew Cash, Calum Chambers, Tyrone Mings (c), Lucas Digne; Jacob Ramsey, Douglas Luiz, John McGinn; Emiliano Buendia; Ollie Watkins, Carney Chukwuemeka.
The stakes are higher here for Burnley, who need at least a draw to enter the final day of the season outside the relegation zone. The Clarets have won just two of their last 19 away games, with only relegated Norwich scoring fewer goals on the road this term than their five. If there's ever a time for the Lancastrians to buck that trend, it's now.
Aston Villa enter their last home game of the season 14th in the Premier League with a top-half finish still not ruled out. Villa start well but have struggled to see games out lately, having opened the scoring in each of their last four league games but failing to go on to win their last two against Liverpool and Crystal Palace.
