    La Liga legend David Villa announces retirement plans

    One of La Liga's all-time greats David Villa announced his plans to retire from football in January after a season with Vissel Kobe in Japan’s J-League. Villa starred for a number of Spanish clubs including Sporting Gijon, Real Zaragoza, Valencia, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid where he won the La Liga Santander title on three occasions, with Barcelona in 2010/11 and 2012/13, and then again with Atleti in 2013/14.

    Five La Liga players net for Spain

    Spain breezed through the first of their November Euro 2020 qualifiers on Friday night with a 7-0 win over Malta in Cadiz. Five of the scorers came from La Liga Santander clubs with Alvaro Morata (Atletico Madrid), Jesus Navas (Sevilla), Pau Torres, Santi Cazorla and Gerard Moreno (all Villarreal ) all getting on the scoresheet.

    Granada's great start to their maiden top-flight campaign has seen them reward their coach Diego Martinez with a contract extension which will see him remain with the Nasrids until 2021. Martinez, whose side are placed eighth in the 20 team log have recorded an impressive six wins - including a 2-0 win against defending champions Barcelona - five draws and have only tasted defeat on three occasions.

    Marcelo celebrates 13 years with Real Madrid

    The Brazilian full-back has celebrated the 13th anniversary of his unveiling as a Real Madrid player. Since making his debut on  15 November 2006, Marcelo has gone on to make 494 appearances for the club: “The day I arrived was a dream come true and I’m still living this dream to this day,” he told the club’s official media channel.

    16 years of Lionel Messi

    Over in Barcelona, there was another high-profile anniversary, with November 16 marking the 16th anniversary of Lionel Messi’s friendly debut for the club. Back in 2003, he came on in the 71st minute of a friendly away at FC Porto, replacing Fernando Navarro. A moment that will go down in football history.

    Aitor Fernandez signs a new deal with Levante

    Like Martinez, Levante goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez has been rewarded with a new contract after his impressive displays so far this campaign. He has renewed with Levane until 2023.

    Sime Vrsaljko returns

    Vrsaljko hasn’t played since January due to a serious knee injury but the Croatian has finally returned to the training pitch at Atleti. The 27-year-old, who has been capped 43 times at international level, has been working with the club’s fitness staff to get back to full match fitness.

    Several rounds of kick-off times have been released by La Liga over the past week, all the way up to Matchday 19. There will be no match in the usual 18.30 PM CET slot on 05 January, ensuring that families are able to attend the traditional ‘Kings’ Day’ parades that go on across Spain on that day.
