Technical director Oti Akenteng says it is almost impossible for the Black Stars to make the 2018 World Cup

Ghana Football Association technical director Francis Oti Akenteng believes the Black Stars' chances of reaching the 2018 Fifa World Cup are all but over.

The three-time participants are in danger of missing out on the global showpiece for the first time in 12 years following a poor start to the final round qualifiers for Russia 2018.

The team sit third in Group E, five points adrift of leaders Egypt following a draw and a defeat in the first two games.

“It’s not an easy task to qualify ahead of Egypt," Akenteng told Boss FM.

“If we [Ghana] were leading Egypt by five points, we wouldn’t allow them to qualify ahead of us, so they won’t allow us to qualify too.

“Despite how difficult it’ll be, we will still try our best to qualify for the World Cup.

“We should be hopeful that we will win our remaining matches."

Ghana were held to a goalless draw at home by Uganda in the first game in October last year.

The team's woes continued by the 2-0 defeat to Egypt on matchday two in November.

The Black Stars will play Congo in a double header in August/September.

Ghana made their World Cup debut at Germany 2006, and has since gone to successively play at South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014.
