GOAL has what you need to know about why Jurgen Klopp, unlike Pep Guardiola, decides not to wear a suit on matchday

Top-class managers such as Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte are known for their fashion sense on the sidelines, opting to oversee matches dressed in suits and semi-formal attire.

Jurgen Klopp, however, has gained a reputation as a manager who foregoes wearing suits to matches, instead choosing for a simple tracksuit and casual attire.

So what's behind the Liverpool manager's fashion sense? GOAL takes a look.

Why does Jurgen Klopp not wear a suit?

Klopp has stated that wearing a tracksuit has become part of his identity as a manager, stressing that each coach should wear whatever is most comfortable for them.

"I was a player and the next day I was the manager. In my locker room was the tracksuit of the guy who had the job two days before. It didn’t even fit me," Klopp told The Guardian.

"I was just focused on the game. I never thought about how I look. I know it’s not too cool because we are working in public, but then when I came to Borussia Dortmund I thought: ‘Maybe I have to change'. I went for a while wearing jeans and a shirt. But I just didn’t feel comfortable. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad for you.

Klopp added: "I think the best-dressed manager is Pep Guardiola. Everything he wears looks exactly right for him. He doesn’t wear a suit, just casual stuff.

"Be yourself as a coach. If you want to look great, then wonderful. I’m just not made for this. It’s important you do what is right for you because whatever role model you have, you can never do the same things.

"I like when you see the soul or character of the coach in the team. Guardiola again: you see a team and think: ‘Wow, that’s either Guardiola or somebody who worked with him.’ But you can never be exactly the same.

"Dressing is one part of our character. Wear what you want, but don’t make it the most important thing. In the end the game is what counts. But don’t worry: you can be world champion in a suit or a tracksuit. You just have to be comfortable.”

Has Jurgen Klopp ever worn a suit to matches?

Klopp has worn suits in the past, particularly as manager of Borussia Dortmund when they were playing Champions League games, but has since stated that he had only done so because someone told him to – not by choice.

“I have a suit for weddings, funerals and if somebody tells me I have to wear a suit. For me it’s not ideal,” Klopp had told TalkSport.

“I have no reason to wear one. I don’t feel comfortable in it and I cannot breathe properly.

“I don’t want to have to think about my outfit before a game, so I’m really happy that the kitman can give me something that I can jump into.”

He continued: “When I first started in the Champions League I wore them because I was told by somebody it was a duty.

“But from the first time I saw another manager next to me not wearing a suit, I was done.

“I’m not interested in small talk. I don’t want to look good on the sideline, my team should look good. That’s my main target.”
