Wayne Rooney should be an A-League target, says Robbie Slater

The A-League has big name players in their sights and former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney should be one of them, according to former Socceroo Robbie Slater.

Rooney is contracted for another season with Premier League side Everton but reports have emerged that the 32-year-old is on the verge of joining Major League Soccer side DC United.

After re-joining the Toffees in 2017 after 13 seasons with the Red Devils, Rooney experienced a relatively successful return to Goodison Park ending the past campaign as the club's top goal scorer with 10 strikes in a complicated season for Everton.

Reports suggest he will travel to Washington this week to meet with DC United and it's believed Everton are open to letting Rooney depart should he be interested.

While it looks like America will be his next destination, Slater has stressed Australia should be looking to get the England international Down Under.

"Of course we should, 100 percent," Rooney told Sky Sports Big Sports Breakfast.

"Maybe it just comes down to the dollars and we can't match them for dollars but we need marquee players.

"And I've got a feeling we'll get a couple before the start of next season, which we need.

"Let's hope the Hyundai A-League gets a bit of a spark, bit of a kick up its pants from a marquee signing."

Football Federation Australian have hinted at a potential return to signing marquee players with a list of targets recently leaked

Andres Iniesta and Franck Ribery were two big names linked to the A-League over the past month but both have opted against any potential moves just yet.
