WATCH: Great Brazil can beat Argentina without Neymar, says Willian

The Chelsea man believes the Selecao are strong enough to cope with the Barcelona star's absence and is keen to prove he deserves a starting role

Brazil midfielder Willian says he is confident the five-time world champions can see off Argentina without Neymar.

Barcelona star Neymar was left out of the squad for the Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour double-header with Argentina and Australia in Melbourne this week, one of a number of regular starters given a much-needed summer break.

But Chelsea star Willian is confident the new-look Selecao have enough strength in depth to beat Lionel Messi and the hermanos.

“Of course, to be missing Neymar for this game is difficult because we know what quality he provides to us,” said Willian.

“But I think we have enough players to make up for the difference. We have a great team, a great squad, so we have to show that on Friday.”

Willian is one of a number of Selecao stars trying to play their way into the team this month. The 28-year-old Chelsea man is the only player since coach Tite’s June 2016 arrival to lose his place in the starting lineup due to anything other than injury or suspension.

He was replaced by Philippe Coutinho, but with the Liverpool man looking set to be trialled in a deeper midfield role, Willian will have a point to prove.

“Every time I join the Selecao I try to maintain my good form and prove why I was called up,” he said.

“This time it’s no different, whether I am starting or not. The group is really strong, there are so many players qualified to start for Brazil and the competition for places is really healthy.”

Brazil host Argentina at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, before taking on Australia at the same venue four days later.
