Despite netting 20 goals for the Swiss champions, the Ivorian’s future remains uncertain

Ivorian attacker Seydou Doumbia remains uncertain of his future, despite scoring an impressive 20 goals in 25 appearances for Swiss Super League champions FC Basel, where he also finished as the league's top goalscorer.

Doumbia, on loan from AS Roma, rounded off his season in style, netting a brace in Basel’s 4-1 thumping of St. Gallen on Friday in their final match of the season before heading to Rotterdam to join the Elephants for international duty.

The 29-year-old is contracted to the Serie A side until June 2019 after his €14.4m move from CSKA Moscow in January 2016.

But his struggles for game time in his first season in Italy saw him loaned back to Moscow and then Newcastle United for the 2015/2016 season. The loan spells to the two sides didn’t prove too fruitful for the forward as it yielded a meagre 16 appearances and just five goals. His poor form cost him a place in the then African Champions squad at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

But his 20 goals in 25 appearances for Bebbi in the recently concluded campaign has sent out an alert to several sides who are now reportedly keen to bring him on board. And one such club is Primera Division outfit, Valencia.

The €6m price tag set by Roma on the forward is reportedly too high for Basel and so are his wages, but Valencia are said to be preparing an offer for the Yamoussoukro-born forward.

Doumbia watched from the bench as Marc Wilmots' Elephants were thrashed 5-0 by Netherlands in an international friendly played at Stadion Feijenoord on Sunday.
