Legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was reportedly approached to replace Graham Arnold as Sydney FC manager over the off-season.
Fox Sports reporter Daniel Garb revealed a bid was made for Wenger, who departed the Gunners after 22 years, to join the Sky Blues.
"Sydney FC did put in a bid for Arsene Wenger when Graham Arnold left, that I know,” Garb said on the Fox Football Podcast.
The extraordinary attempt ultimately came to nothing however, with the Sky Blues appointing former assistant Steve Corica as coach and Wenger enjoying a well-deserved break from the football pitch.
Wenger, now 68, is no stranger to Asian football having taken charge of Japanese side Nagoya Grampus prior to joining Arsenal in 1996.
He was also in Australia last year when Arsenal took on the Sky Blues and Western Sydney Wanderers in pre-season friendlies.
With Wenger seemingly turning down Sydney FC's approaches, the club will be hoping Corica can fill the void left behind by the new Socceroos coach.
