After letting the I-League title slip from their grasp, East Bengal will have another opportunity to win a major trophy for the first time since capturing the 2012 Federation Cup when they face Bengaluru FC in the final of the Super Cup.
The last domestic trophy claimed by Khalid Jamil's side was when they pipped arch-rivals Mohun Bagan to the 2017 Calcutta Football League (CFL) title in the final matchday of the league."It is a final match. We must think positive and play well," the Kolkata outfit's coach told reporters ahead of the tie at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, on Friday.
Nigerian forward Dudu Omagbemi limped off after scoring the all important 79th minute winner against FC Goa on Tuesday in order to make it to the final showdown.
"Maybe Dudu will be fine for the final," Jamil said about the availibility of East Bengal's top scorer for the season.
The former Mumbai FC tactician has acknowledged that East Bengal are a better side since Subhash Bhowmick has been roped in as technical director while warning his team against complacency against an opponent of Bengaluru FC's calibre.
"It is the last match of the season. Bengaluru FC is a great team, no doubt. We cannot afford to make mistakes. The preparations are there. Subhash Bhowmick is helping us a lot in all the departments," said Jamil.
Sunil Chhetri and Miku have scored hat-tricks in Bengaluru FC's quarter-final and semi-final clashes respectively, and the duo have amassed a total number of 37 goals amongst themselves for the club this season.
However, Jamil refuses to take the rest of the Bengaluru squad for granted. "As I said, all Bengaluru players are good. We cannot pinpoint. We have to mark everyone," the 40-year-old remarked.
"Bengaluru defenders' injuries is not advantage for us. They have good bench strength," he added while pertaining to Juanan and Rahul Bheke's likely exclusion from the final.
East Bengal centre back Eduardo Ferreira came close to winning the 2017 Federation Cup with Mohun Bagan, only to end up on the losing side on account of Bengaluru FC's 2-0 vicotry in the final.
"I know they (Bengaluru) have good players good coach. One of the best teams in the country. But we have to keep focus and play well. Last year's Fed Cup final is past. I am thinking about tomorrow's game. I want to give my best tomorrow (Friday)," the Brazilian explained.
