Socceroos lock in Oman friendly before Asian Cup

The Socceroos have confirmed a friendly against Oman will be played on December 30 in Dubai as preparation for the Asian Cup in January.

Oman are coached by former Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek and the 82nd-ranked nation loom as an ideal warm up for Graham Arnold's side.

A 23-man strong Australian squad is gradually arriving in the Middle East with Arnold keen to use the friendly as a way to get players short on game time this season up to speed.

“With limited days to prepare for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup, Sunday’s match against Oman represents a great opportunity for us to refresh some of the principles that we worked on during our September, October, and November camps," Arnold said.

“Importantly, the game against Oman will serve as a great chance to provide players that haven’t played as regularly with their clubs match minutes against a strong west Asian nation.

“It will also be nice to see Pim again. We shared many great memories with the Socceroos and he has done a fantastic job with Oman.

"We are expecting a tough match but also a game played in a great spirit as both nations prepare for the tournament proper.”

Oman have won their past three games and are undefeated across their last 13 matches, while the Socceroos are yet to lose under Arnold having most recently beat Lebanon 3-0.

The friendly will begin at 4pm local time (11pm AEDT) and be shown live on Fox Sports and Channel 10.

Australia will kick-off their Asian Cup defence against Jordan on January 6.
