The Buccaneers are looking to become the first South African club to win two Champions League titles

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Rulani Mokwena has stressed the importance of the team's trip to Zambia.

On Tuesday, the Buccaneers departed for Ndola, Zambia, where they will continue their preparations ahead of the start of the 2018/19 season.

Bucs are expected to make their return to the Caf Champions League in December 2018 and Mokwena feels that their Zambian camp will serve as the perfect preparation for the prestigious club competition.

"Things are fine as we prepare for the new season. Our trip to Zambia is part of our Champions League preparations," Mokwena said on  Isolezwe.

The Bucs squad recently returned from a trip to Nelspruit, where the players were taken through their paces under the watchful eyes of Mokwena and Pirates head coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic.

"We are committed as a team as we want to do well in the tournament," he continued.

The Soweto giants are back in the Champions League having previously reached the 2013 final where they lost to Egyptian football powerhouse Al Ahly.

Bucs will be hoping to go all way and clinch their second Champions League title in the new season.

"We should remember that Pirates won the Champions League in 1995. What we should be aware of is that it was (under) the same chairman in charge of the party (Irvin Khoza)," he added.

Khoza, who is also the Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman, led the Buccaneers to their first Champions League title in 1995.

Mokwena hopes that Khoza's expertise and wisdom will help the club do well in the continental club tournament.

"So, our chairman has a great deal of expertise with the Champions League as a soccer leader in various levels," he said.

"We expect him to lead us and give us advice and wisdom," Mokwena concluded.

The 2018/19 Champions League campaign is scheduled to start in December 2018, right after the 2018 season has finished, and end in May 2019.
