Rooney will go on scoring - Sir Bobby Charlton

Sir Bobby Chartlon has congratulated England captain Wayne Rooney after the striker became the nation's record goal scorer, and insisted that the 29-year-old will go on scoring for club and country.

Rooney netted the record 50th goal in the 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Switzerland, beating Charlton's tally of 49 strikes that had stood since 1970.

And Charlton praised the Manchester United striker for reaching such a landmark.

"I would like to congratulate Wayne on becoming England's leading goalscorer," Charlton told Manchester United's official website. 

"It is a record that I am sure [Rooney] will hold for a long time, and it is clear to see that [Rooney] will go on scoring for [his] club and country for a long time to come."

Charlton, who was part of England's World Cup winning side in 1966, admitted he was slightly disappointed to no longer hold the record, but expressed delight that it was Rooney who finally surpassed the long-standing goal tally.

"I obviously cannot deny that I am disappointed that I now don't hold this record, however, I am absolutely delighted that it is Wayne, as captain of my beloved club and country, who now holds this record," the 77-year-old added.

"I have always been very proud to hold this record. Playing for my country was always an honour and a privilege and something I did with great pride."
