Diego Simeone's side will be looking to capitalise on Madrid's shock loss to Sevilla as they travel to the Bernabeu to contest the derby

Real Madrid will host city rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday evening at the Santiago Bernabeu to contest a heated derby clash in the capital.

Julen Lopetegui's side will be having their teeth bared heading into the derby following a stunning 3-0 loss to Sevilla in midweek, as well as wanting to exact revenge after a 4-2 loss to Atletico in the UEFA Super Cup.

The Madrid coach has denied the impact of Cristiano Ronaldo's departure to Juventus on his team, after scoring 12 goals in their opening six matches, though Atletico are in a similar situation of struggling to score – with star Antoine Griezmann netting only twice so far this season.

An upset at the Bernabeu, however, would improve Atletico's relatively slow start to the La Liga campaign and a win could give them the push they need to challenge for the title, especially just after Barcelona dropped points against Athletic Bilbao.

The Madrid derby follows a stunning week in Spain when La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid both lost on the same day – with Lopetegui's side rocked by a 3-0 loss to Sevilla

Neither Madrid side have been on particularly scintillating so far this season, with the two occupying second and third spots in the league table and just two points separating the pair.

The European champions know that they will not be able to afford dropping more points following the shock defeat to Sevilla in midweek where they found themselves three goals down by half-time, despite remaining one point behind table-toppers Barcelona.

Real Madrid have only scored once in their last two games, though Lopetegui has dismissed concerns that his side have found difficulty in front of goal, or that they have struggled to fill the Ronaldo-shaped void in their attack.

Atletico eased to a 3-0 win in midweek against Huesca and still look to provide a decent title challenge despite not having yet seen the best of Griezmann, though it is only thanks to the likes of their rivals dropping points that they remain a contender to win La Liga.

The absences of Marcelo and Isco for Real Madrid will also give Atletico confidence.

Diego Simeone's men will likely head into the derby refreshed and recharged as they are aware that taking advantage of Real Madrid's inconsistent form and the fatigue of key players such as Luka Modric will be crucial going forward.
