Portugal & Croatia set record at Euro 2016 - but it's not one to be proud of

Cristiano Ronaldo may have been on the pitch but no shot was registered in the 90 minutes of play as a dreadful game was decided in extra time

Portugal and Croatia gave everyone an early bedtime on Saturday evening as their football sent pretty much everyone to sleep.

Cristiano Ronaldo was hardly given a sniff, while Croatia’s attack was uncharacteristically quiet.

The two countries' combined impotence has set a new - albeit unwanted - record at Euro 2016.

It was the first game in any major international tournament since 1980 that didn’t have a shot on target in 90 minutes.

Thankfully for Portugal, extra time was right around the corner and Ricardo Quaresma was on hand to head his side into the quarter-final stage.
