'Pirlo...get on the damn plane' - Avondale's unbelievable NPL comeback

10:31 am AEST 15/9/18
The Victorian club have defied the odds and scoreline to book their spot in the NPL Victoria grand final

With 115 minutes played in a tense National Premier League Victoria semi-final, Avondale found themselves 3-1 down against an experienced Bentleigh Greens outfit and you wouldn't have blamed them for packing it in.

But rather than lay down, the club that made headlines during the week for their attempt to sign Andrea Pirlo, stood up and completed one of football's most unbelievable comebacks.

Two Bentleigh own goals in the 118th and 119th minutes turned the game on its head and rather than try their luck in penalties, Avondale somehow wrapped up the contest before the final whistle.

Former Melbourne Heart player Jonatan Germano curling in a free-kick in the dying moments to seal a moment he and the club won't soon forget.

Avondale have been a club on the rise over the past few years and they'll now face Heidelberg in the NPL Victoria grand final on September 23.

Both Bentleigh and Avondale are both also still alive in the FFA Cup with Avondale preparing to face to Sydney FC and Greens set to play Heidelberg.

Avondale are hoping to lure Pirlo out of retirement to feature in that game, but if this performance is anything to go by they are more than capable of pulling off an upset themselves.
