Optus Sport favourite to win UEFA Champions League rights in Australia

Telecommunications giant Optus is firming as favourite to win the broadcast rights in Australia for the world's premier club competition - the UEFA Champions League.

Via their Optus Sport offering, the network plan to snare exclusive televising privileges to the competition from next season as they continue to establish a foothold in the Australian football market.

The Champions League rights would allow Optus "to add another string to our bow", according to Optus executive Allan Lew, who was talking to the Australian Financial Review about the company's goal to become the home of worldwide football in Australia.

beINSports were the previous holder of the Champions League rights, securing them from ESPN in 2015.

After first snaring the rights to the English Premier League for the 2016-17 season, Optus moved to secure exclusive access to next month's World Cup - with all 64 matches being shown live on their platform.

For the first time since acquiring football rights, the company will allow non-subscribers to their network and broadband the ability to purchase a subscription to watch the World Cup.

Their World Cup programming can be watched on television via a Fetch box, or on computer, tablet and mobile via the Optus Sport app.
