Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane vows to maintain his number one spot between the sticks despite the presence of Brighton Mhlongo and Jackson Mabokgwane.
“Look, there is always tough competition amongst goalkeepers especially in a team like Pirates, but every player in the current squad has the same chance to prove themselves under coach Kjell,” Mpontshane told Vodacom Soccer.
The 31-year-old has made four starts this season and it looks as if he will retain the spot after keeping a clean sheet away to Highlands Park over the weekend when Bloemfontein Celtic comes to town in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.
For Mpontshane, who before now played second fiddle to Mhlongo since arriving in January 2015 from Platinum Stars, he is keen to grab the opportunity given by Jonevret with both hands.
“He gives everyone a chance and believes in committed players. So, that means everyone who is given a chance must grab it with both hands.

“It’s every goalkeeper’s desire to be a regular in the team’s starting line-up, and I’m happy that I have been in the team for consecutive games,” Mpontshane said.
His recent inclusion in the first-team has not made Mpontshane rest on his laurels, but he remains committed to keep the number one slot.
“That has come as a motivational factor for me to double my efforts, because I know that as the team’s second choice keeper I still have a challenge to work until I reach a point where I can finally be considered as a first choice,” Mpontshane said.
“But there is healthy competition amongst us as Bucs keepers and whoever is in the starting line-up gets support from others.
“I will never rest on my laurels, but will keep on working hard and help the team to finish the season in a respectable position on the standings and challenge for the Nedbank Cup title,” Mpontshane continued.
