Melbourne City sign Mark Birighitti after European stint

Australian goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has signed a three-year deal with Melbourne City after spending the past two seasons in Europe.

The 27-year-old left Newcastle Jets for Premier League side Swansea City in 2016 where he was restricted to appearances for their youth team before moving to Eredivisie side NAC Breda a year later.

Though playing regularly in the Netherlands, Birighitti has decided to return to Australia and link up with Warren Joyce's side.

As first reported by The Covert Agent last month, the transfer comes after Dean Bouzanis sealed a loan move to PEC Zwolle which left Eugene Galekovic as the only senior goalkeeper at City.

While savouring his time abroad and feeling a better player for it, Birighitti is happy to be back in the A-League and aiming to help City win some silverware.

"It was a great experience, moving from Australia to the Premier League was a massive jump," Birighitti said.

"I took so much from being at such a fantastic club like Swansea.

"I’m pleased to be returning to Australia and to join a club with genuine title aspirations and a group with talent like Melbourne City is very exciting.

"I’ve worked hard over the past couple of seasons and learnt a lot which I hope to put that to good use this season and challenge for a regular place in the team."
