Matildas held to late draw by the United States at Tournament of Nations

Matildas v USAGetty

The Matildas have been held to a 1-1 draw by the United States at the Tournament on Nations.

Both sides started their campaigns with victories and this clash loomed as a decisive one with Australia looking to defend their title against a side that hadn't lost in over a year.

That loss was in fact against the Matildas at the 2017 Tournament of Nations with the US going close to falling victim to Alen Stajcic's side once again.

After a very open start to the match in Connecticut, the Matildas would open the scoring in the 22nd minute after a superb run from Lisa De Vanna saw her feed through Chloe Logarzo, who slotted the ball calmly into the bottom right of goal.

De Vanna remained at the heart of Australia's surges forward, while the Americans peppered the Matildas back line but struggled to carve out any clear chances for an equaliser with Lydia Williams saving a dipping effort just before half-time.

The US began the second 45 minutes with real intensity as they continued to probe a determined Matildas defence.

Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe were looking the most likely to pull a goal back, but it would be Lindsey Horan who proved to be the American hero as her header pulled the US level right on 90 minutes.

The 1-1 result, arguably a fair scoreline on the balance of play, sets up a dramatic finale to the Tournament of Nations with the Matildas set to play Japan on Friday while the US face off against Brazil.

Japan are only side that can't win the tournament after falling to both Brazil and America, with Australia still in a good position to defend their title.
