Martial matches scoring achievement of Henry & Man Utd legend Cantona

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has matched the achievements of fellow Frenchmen Thierry Henry and Eric Cantona by netting in five successive Premier League games.

The 22-year-old has struggled for consistency throughout his time at Old Trafford, leading to questions regarding a regular role in the Red Devils side.

It appeared as though the 2018-19 campaign would follow a similar theme when he started the season slipping in and out of Jose Mourinho’s plans.

Martial has, however, been given a run by his Portuguese boss and rewarded that show of faith by making an important contribution in the final third.

He recorded his first Premier League goal of the season in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Newcastle, before bagging a brace in a 2-2 draw away at Chelsea.

His next effort proved to be the match winner as United edged past Everton at Old Trafford, and he netted again the following week in another 2-1 triumph against Bournemouth.

An impressive scoring run continued in a Manchester derby date with City, as he converted a second-half penalty at the Etihad Stadium.

To have emulated Arsenal icon Henry is some achievement, with the World Cup winner widely acknowledged to be one of the finest forwards to have ever graced the Premier League.

United legend Cantona also fits into that category after proving to be a talismanic figure during his time at Old Trafford.

Olivier Giroud, who is now on the books at Chelsea, has been another Frenchman to star in English football, while Nicolas Anelka enjoyed productive stints with Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Bolton and Chelsea.

Martial will be hoping that he can join that illustrious group of strikers by landing a Premier League title of his own, but that dream appears unlikely to be fulfilled in 2018-19.

Despite finding the target for United against City, Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions proved too strong on home soil and Mourinho’s men are stuck in eighth spot and playing catch-up in the race for top-four finishes.
