Liverpool reward Trent Alexander-Arnold with an improved five-year contract

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s impressive rise at Liverpool has been rewarded with a new five-year contract on improved terms.

The 18-year-old, who broke into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team plans last season making 12 appearances in all competitions, is held in the highest esteem at the club.

This is evidenced by the Merseysiders putting together a fresh deal for the teenager, who only signed his previous contract in November 2016.

Alexander-Arnold started out as a striker, before being converted to a No. 6 by first-team development coach Pepijn Lijnders when he was in charge of the Under-16 team.

The Scouser, born in West Derby which houses Liverpool’s Melwood facility, is now an exciting deputy to right-back Nathaniel Clyne.

He made his Premier League debut in the 1-1 draw at Manchester United in place of the England international, who was ruled out with an abdominal issue.

Klopp is an admirer of Alexander-Arnold's ability to understand and execute the tactical demands of multiple roles.

"Trent sets the tone for everything he does with his attitude and character," the Reds boss told Liverpool's official website.

“He commits to everything he does: he wants to learn, he wants to grow, he wants to develop and his focus is absolutely in the right place.

"He embraces being part of the first-team environment. He never shrinks or hides.

“We must remember he is young and is still at the very start of his journey. I have said before and believe in it completely - this club has the perfect culture and environment for helping young, talented players. But ultimately it's about them and Trent has had a benchmark attitude so far. The challenge for him now is to maintain this and even improve it.”

A more muscular Alexander-Arnold reported to Liverpool’s pre-season training this week, having turned down the chance to represent England Under-19s at the European Championships.

The club's Young Player of the Year has designs on making a further impact under Klopp in the campaign ahead and wanted to focus fully on being in the right shape to achieve as much.

“You can never be satisfied with where you are. There is always room for improvement. It’s not a good thing if you ever are satisfied in football, you’ve always got to strive for better,” he said.

“Maybe you can dwell on achievements for a little bit but you can’t dwell on them for weeks or months. You’ve got to get back to the hard work.

“That’s what I’ll do straight away – I’ll get back into training, I’ll work hard and I’ll try to fight for a place in the team.”
