Squads & Team News

Ted Esther, Light Stars coach, November 2018

They will have to pull off one of the greatest comeback wins in the history of the Champions League in order to advance to the next round of the tournament.

The last time Stars hosted a South African club in a Caf competition was two years ago.

Pirates' Gauteng rivals, Bidvest Wits thrashed Stars 3-0 in the 2016 Caf Confederation Cup preliminary round first-leg match at the Stade d’Amitié.

Stars head coach Ted Esther will look to Mario Ravo, who scored the team's away goal against Pirates at the Orlando Stadium.

Meanwhile, Pirates will be confident of securing another a victory over Stars which would see them advance to the first round.

The Soweto giants are heading into this encounter having played to a 0-0 draw with Maritzburg United in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) match at home over the weekend.

Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic is most likely to recall his fringe players, who did the job in the first-leg clash against Stars.

Thabo Qalinge and Linda Mntambo found the back of the net for the Buccaneers, but they were dropped from the starting line-up ahead of the clash with Maritzburg.

The 1995 Champions League winners will once again look to their Zambian strikers Justin Shonga and Augustine Mulenga, who both scored in the first-leg clash.

Pirates will be without Luvuyo Memela and Gladwin Shitolo as the two players are still out nursing long-term injuries.

Potential Pirates XI: Mabokgwane, Da Silva, Munetsi, Mobara, Mako, Makola, Mntambo, Maphangule, Mulenga, Qalinge, Mahachi.

Match Preview
