Kotoko shouldn't set lofty targets for Akonnor, says Tanko

The Black Stars deputy coach believes the Porcupine Warriors must not set huge targets for their new head coach

Ghana assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko thinks it is wrong for Asante Kotoko to expect instant results from new head coach C.K Akonnor.

The 44-year-old replaced Paa Kwesi Fabin in a three-year deal on Monday and has been tasked to annex the Ghana Premier League in his first season.

Kotoko’s chief executive officer George Amoako says the new coach must also add the Caf Champions League or Confederation Cup as short term target.

“They shouldn’t put pressure on Akonnor by setting targets for him so quick. He just came and needs time," Tanko told 442gh.

"It’s obviously good that they have given him a three-year mandate. If he wins even the Ghana Premier League in his first year that should be a plus but it should not be the target.

"I believe they should give him the chance to build a formidable team. After his second year, if they venture into Caf Champions League or Caf Confederation Cup that would be good at that point.

“But for now, I don’t think they should put unnecessary pressure on him. They should just allow him to build a team first before any target follows," he added.

Akonnor was unveiled to the club's players, technical team and supporters ahead of his first training session on Wednesday.
