Jose Mourinho backs Australia to escape World Cup group

The Red Devils boss believes the green and gold can get out of a tough group in Russia

The Socceroos have found some unusual support in the form of Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho ahead of a tough World Cup campaign.

Drawn alongside France, Denmark and Peru, Australia face a stern test in Russia and are at long odds to get to the round of 16.

Despite being ranked well below their Group C opponents, Mourinho has backed the Socceroos to finish second and go on to face Argentina in the World Cup knockout stage. 

"I think France, no problems, will finish first," Mourinho said on RT.

"Big fight to finish second.

"I'll go for a surprise. C'mon Australia, let's finish second!"

The green and gold will start their World Cup campaign against tournament favourites France on June 16 in Kazan before subsequent games against Denmark and Peru.

Australia claimed their first win under new coach Bert van Marwijk on June 1 after cruising past Czech Republic 4-0.

The Socceroos will end their preparations for Russia with a final friendly against Hungary on June 10.
