ISL 2018-19: Delhi Dynamos' Josep Gombau - We may not win but we have a winning mentality

Delhi Dynamos remained winless and at the bottom of the table after nine rounds in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2018-19 season as they went down 1-0 against Bengaluru FC on Monday.

A late goal from Udanta Singh helped the home side snatch away a point from Josep Gombau’s side.

Dynamos dominated proceedings in the first half and had created numerous chances. Speaking on missed chances, coach Josep Gombau said, “Last two away matches we played against two top teams in ISL, FC Goa and Bengaluru and we had the control of the games. We had a lot of chances to win these games and we missed.

“If you see our games, from the very beginning we had the same problems. We are probably one of those teams who are creating the most chances in a match. We are at the bottom but I think we are playing good football but we are missing chances.”

On being asked if he is planning to sign new players during the transfer window, the former FC Barcelona youth coach said, “We are working hard and make sure that we improve on our finishing. I am not thinking about bringing new players, I think we have a very good group of players. Everyone is working hard and playing well.”

Delhi Dynamos have made a habit of conceding goals late into the match which is costing them points. “We are conceding late goals because we are trying to score goals. This can happen and I don’t think this as a problem. We have the winning mentality from the very beginning. We may not win the matches but at least we have a winning mentality. We are not a team that is happy with a draw. We try to create chances and win the games.”

Dynamos had been fielding Spanish goalkeeper Francisco Dorronsoro in their previous matches which meant they could play only four foreigners in the outfield. Albino Gomes came back to the starting lineup against Bengaluru FC.

“We were playing with four foreigners in the outfield and one foreign goalkeeper (Francisco Dorronsoro). We have a very good goalkeeper in Albino (Gomes) but he was coming back from a long-term injury. At the beginning of the season, he wasn’t ready. But now Albino is starting and I have options of playing an extra foreigner in the outfield. But I am happy with both goalkeepers.”
