Yanga booked a place in the group stages after beating Ethiopia's Wolayta Dicha 2-1 on aggregate

Yanga left the country on Thursday evening to Algeria ready for their Caf Confederation Cup opener against U.S.M Alger on Sunday May 6th.

The Jangwani club departed the country with no hopes of regaining their Premier League title for a record fourth time in a row after being defeated by arch rivals Simba last Sunday.

Their only hope of participating in international tournaments next season remain in this competition after also being eliminated from the Federation Cup by Singida United last month.

Yanga are expecting a tough outing in the game but are keen to get a positive result in the land where they have not secured a win before, according to their spokesman.

Speaking to Goal, before departing the country, Dismas Teni said that they have prepared well enough to outshine their opponents and set a record of a first win in that country.

“We have prepared ourselves well enough and we are very keen to get a good result in the first match,” Said Teni.

However, there is massive blow for the Yanga squad that travelled on Thursday after some of their key players missed the trip.

Ibrahim Ajib, Papy Tshishimbi, Obrey Chirwa, Kelvin Yondani are all set to miss the clash with no reasons provided for their absence.

The Tanzanian defending champions were initially in the Caf Champions League before being eliminated by Botswana’s Township Rollers.

After being knocked out of Champions League, Yanga were relegated to Confederation Cup were they drawn against Ethiopia’s Wolayta Dicha in the playoff round.

Yanga progressed on a 2-1 aggregate victory after two legs and secured a place in the group stage where they were placed in group D alongside U.S.M Alger, Rayon Sports and Gor Mahia.

Who are U.S.M Alger?

Union sportive de la médina d'Alger, known as U.S.M Alger or simply USMA for short, is a football club based in the city of Algiers.

The club was founded in 1937 two years older than Yanga and its colours are red and black. Their venue, the Omar Hamadi Stadium, has a capacity of 12,000. The club is currently playing in the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1.

The club has one of Algeria's most prominent football charts, and have won the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 7 times, the Algerian Cup 8 times and the Algerian Super Cup 2 times.

Performance in CAF competitions

USM Alger has regularly taken part in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions.

Qualification for Algerian clubs is determined by a team's performance in its domestic league and cup competitions, USM Alger have regularly qualified for the primary African competition, the African Cup, by winning the Ligue Professionnelle 1.

USM Alger are the second Algerian club to reach the finals of the CAF Champions League, in 2015, losing the final 4–1 on aggregate to TP Mazembe.

Records and statistics

From the 2002–03 season, goalkeeper Mohamed Lamine Zemmamouche currently holds the team record for total number of games played with more 320 matches until the end of the 2017–18 season, including 240 matches in the league.

Nacereddine Khoualed and former captain has the second most appearances for the club with 286 matches.

Current Premier League form (WLLDL)

They sit fifth at the table with 42 points, eight behind league leaders CS Constantine who have a game in hand. They have won just once against MC Oran in their past five games.
