Arsenal midfielder Gedion Zelalem is the subject of interest from Borussia Dortmund but a move is not close to completion at this stage, Goal understands.

The United States under-23 star has only made one substitute appearance in the EFL Cup this season and has struggled to break into the first team despite several injuries in the centre of Arsenal’s midfield.

Zelalem, 19, was born in Berlin and played for Hertha Berlin’s schoolboy system before emigrating to America with his father in 2006.

A composed, technically astute midfielder with excellent vision, Zelalem spent the whole of last season on-loan at Scottish side Rangers, where he scored one goal and made eight assists across 28 games.

Dortmund have opened talks with Arsenal over signing Zelalem on a permanent deal, however the interest from the Bundesliga giants is not at an advanced stage and a source close to the deal has told Goal that a “move isn’t close as it stands”.
