Benni McCarthy, Cape Town City

COMMENT: Who else should Cape Town City sign?

With coach Benni McCarthy set to lead Cape Town City in his second season in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), the club will once again have their eye on challenging for trophies.

If City want to remain ambitious and to be a force to be reckoned with on the South African football scene, they will have to make the right signings.

City reached the MTN8 Cup final last season and finished sixth in the league, but they will surely have to explore their options and beef up their ranks.

As they have already signed Gift Links from Egyptian Premier League side, Assiouty Sport, now known as Pyramids FC, and Riyaad Norodien from Orlando Pirates, McCarthy will definitely need to bring in a bit more talent.

Nonetheless, Goal explores just some of the players the former Telkom Knockout Cup champions could sign ahead of the highly anticipated 2018/19 PSL season.

TEFU MASHAMAITE

The experienced defender is currently looking for a club after leaving SuperSport United following an underwhelming stint in Tshwane.

Mashamaite could bring a winning mentality at the club as he has a number of gold medals with Kaizer Chiefs and during his stay with SuperSport United.

With City having parted ways with skipper Robyn Johannes, ‘Masha’ could be a great signing for them as he can provide steel and stability at the back.

Moreover, he will be able to lead and guide players such as Kwanda Mngonyama and Taariq Fielies who are set to become regulars for the side.

The 33-year-old’s defensive capabilities are well documented; he is a man McCarthy can count on when it comes to set-pieces - both defensively and offensively.

TRAVIS GRAHAM

The 25-year-old former Ajax Cape Town midfielder is also looking for a new home and could be a solid addition for the Citizens after ending his 16-year stay at Ikamva.

Having skippered the Urban Warriors to glory in 2015 as they beat Amakhosi in the MTN8 Cup, the midfielder could revive his career under coach McCarthy.

After undergoing a sound development programme during his stay with Ajax, he could offer adequate cover for the likes of Teko Modise, Roland Putsche and Thabo Nodada in the middle of the park.

Graham is also used to the Cape Town climate and will not need too much time to settle down. There is also the case of working with John Comitis, a former Ajax boss, who could potentially help the midfielder rediscover his potential.

But whether or not he would be keen to join a rival club remains to be seen.

MPHO MAKOLA

The former Free State Stars midfielder’s future remains the subject of growing speculation at Pirates, and he could be shipped out at the Soweto giants.

Makola struggled for game time last season, but the man known as ‘Bibo’ could benefit from a change of an environment.

In addition, working with his ex-Buccaneers teammate in McCarthy, could turn things around for Makola and help his ambitions of becoming a Bafana Bafana regular.

Orlando Pirates, Mpho Makola

On a good day, Makola can provide immense creativity, produce long range shots and able to flourish in the playmaking role.

With PSL and international experience, McCarthy may need to closely monitor the player’s situation at Pirates and pounce on him should Bucs' head coach Milutin Sredojevic opt against retaining him.

MOGAKOLODI NGELE

With talk that Mamelodi Sundowns are interested in signing midfielder Lyle Lakay, McCarthy can also find himself ending up with a quality player from Chloorkop.

The Botswana international has struggled for regular game time at Sundowns and was subsequently sent out on loan to Bidvest Wits and SuperSport in recent seasons.

Should coach Pitso Mosimane decide to loan him out once again, City may not need to think twice about signing him because he is one of the most educated left-footed players in the top tier.

Mogakolodi Ngele

Ngele’s ability from deadball situations combined with his creative display in the middle of the park or on the wing can definitely solve City's goalscoring problems for the former Bafana Bafana international.

Playing alongside his ex-Sundowns teammate in Modise could also help Ngele to settle down quickly in the Mother City.
