Brisbane Roar has ended their pursuit for a foreign midfielder after the signing of Spanish veteran Alex Lopez.

Having been chasing former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini, the Orange has instead settled for the 30-year-old central midfielder - who has significant experience in Spain's La Liga from a seven-year stint at Celta Vigo.

Lopez was most recently playing for Sporting Gjion in the Spanish Segunda Division and has also had loan stints with Real Valladold and England's Sheffield Wednesday.

Roar coach John Aloisi was delighted to capture Lopez and believes the Spaniard's pedigree proves he is going to be a quality addition to the A-League.

"Alex is a very technically-gifted player who will suit our high-tempo playing style. I am delighted he has chosen to sign for our club," Aloisi said.

"Having played at the highest level in Spain for many seasons, I am confident he will be a great addition to our midfield and our talented squad."

The Roar press release did not mention the length of Lopez's contract.

Lopez joins Danish duo Tobias Mikkelsen and Thomas Kristensen, and Frenchman Eric Bautheac as Brisbane's foreign players for the upcoming campaign.
