Brendon Santalab kicking goals with football app

After over a decade on the football pitch, Brendon Santalab knows how to hit a target and he's quickly doing just that off it after launching his very own app.

My Game Guru was launched three years ago after a chance conversation with family left Santalab realising there was no easy way to keep track of grassroots sport.

Whether it's checking where a family member's local match is being played, if a ground is open or the result of a rival club, My Game Guru makes keeping track of grassroots considerably easier.

While Santalab's focus remains on tasting success as a player, this season with Perth Glory, the 36-year-old has quickly proven his ability as an entrepreneur with his first venture into the world of apps proving particularly successful.

"We’ve built it up over the past three years to 70,000 users throughout Australia," Santalab told Goal.

"It was pretty much a little conversation between family that sparked the idea. From there we found a developer based in Wollongong and we got to construct with our developer exactly what we wanted.

"We sit in a position today with 70,000 users and we’re just delighted to be able to give something to people that makes their game day a lot simpler. It gives them the opportunity to follow their kids' team, their nephews all on the same page. There’s even a link to Google maps so you can receive notifications on changes and cancellations.

"It’s pretty simple, we’re really happy. We’re growing every year and we haven’t earned any money from it, we don’t charge for it, we just want to keep building it up."

Though My Game Guru has given a glimpse into what Santalab could get up to after his playing days are over, the man himself isn't even contemplating hanging up the boots just yet.

"I haven’t even thought about it to be honest," he said.

"Really enjoying pre-season and working under Popa again. I’ve always got that flame in me, that spark and the day that goes down is when I’ll consider stopping.

"At this moment now, I’m enjoying it and I have no thoughts to retire. I feel I can play for a while longer. As soon as there’s any doubt in mind I’ll definitely look at what I’ll do post football."
