Fit-again Schalke 04 defender Baba Rahman is set for this season's Bundesliga challenge, indicating his personal and team's readiness to improve their record from the previous season.

The Royal Blues, who finished second in the German topflight in 2017-18, are eyeing another good run this campaign as they prepare to face Wolfsburg in the league opener on Saturday.

It will be a week after a 2-0 triumph over lower tier side Schweinfurt in the German Cup.

“The Bundesliga is a different competition so we must concentrate on that now and I believe we are ready for Wolfsburg,” Baba told his club's official website.

The victory over Schweinfurt was not just a good season start for Schalke but also a significant individual step for the Ghanaian.

With a full-time appearance, the cup game marked Baba's first start at club level since December 2016 following a long-term injury he sustained while playing for Ghana at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

“I feel really good,” the 24-year-old said.

“I feel 100 per cent and I’ve got my strength back.

“With more match practice, you can regain your strength quicker.”

Baba may be back in contention for regular game time but there are no guarantees of a starting berth at Veltins-Arena following the Royal Blues' acquisition of Morocco's World Cup star Hamza Mendyl.

“We have to play many games and therefore need a good squad," the Ghanaian said of the brewing competition at left-back.

"Everyone obviously wants to play but sometimes your body needs a break.

“We will work hard and the head coach will figure out the best formation.

"He knows exactly what is best for the team.”

Baba is at Schalke on loan from Premier League side Chelsea
