Akwa United unveil Brazilian Rafael Everton as new coach

The Promise Keepers have named a new tactician in place of Abdu Maikaba who left the team for Plateau United at the end of last season

Akwa United have unveiled Rafael Everton as their new coach for the 2018-19 season.

Everton, a Brazilian who led FC Ifeanyi Ubah to the Federation Cup title in 2016 replaced Abdu Maikaba who opted not to renew his two years contract and has become the head coach of Plateau United.

The former Abia Warriors helmsman will be under huge pressure to replicate the shoe vacated by Maikaba who won the Federation Cup crown with the Promise Keepers last year and made Akwa United finish the last league season in second place behind Lobi Stars.

Speaking during the unveiling, Everton disclosed that he took up the challenge of coaching Akwa United because he loves taking up a fresh challenge and that he also loves working in the Nigerian league with the experience he had while working with FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Abia Warriors.

“I like picking up new challenges when it comes to my profession and that is what pushes me to strive more as a person that desires to great,” Everton told media.

“To me, Nigeria is my second home and I feel comfortable working in Nigeria as a professional coach. I have worked with two teams before here in Nigeria and I am used to the terrain.

“The facilities on the ground will be good for my philosophy and I do hope to succeed here in Uyo. I believe in my job and I believe that I can win trophies with Akwa United.”
